MS-6728 (neo2 865pe) sata drive problems

Hi,

My dad is having some problems with sata drives on his computer. I normally solve his problems for him but this is stumping me.

He has bought two motherboards now, firstly an Abit board, and now the above MSI board.

What is happening is that the motherboard picks up the hard drives, but every now and again, when the computer is shut down, the next time he turns it on, the bios does not pick up the drives and we have to fiddle with the bios again.

The hard drives are fine, as they work perfectly on my computer without losing the settings.

I have suggested that the boards are either faulty or just cheap or something but I wondered if anyone has heard of this before and can come up with a solution.

Could this possibly be being caused by memory or memory settings?

Does the problem happen with both boards? What are the rest of your system components?

Happens with both boards yes. He had an abit board but had to use a driver disk to install the hard drive with winxp. The same thing happened so he bought an MSI board to replace it.

The system is a pentiun 4 3ghz with 1gb ram (2xpc3200 same make etc), geforce5700fx, onboard sound, 1 DVD writer.

I have updated his motherboard bios last night and the bios update said it adds support for drives larger than 137gb, so I am hoping that the reason was because his drive is 200gb.

Anyway ill let you know how it goes.

Its certainly baffling me as my own MSI board works perfectly with the drives.
