    Problems ripping a DVD

OK, so i downloaded smart ripper... When I tried to RIP one of my DVD's I got an error message saying something was locked, and to try to use a player to unlock it... So I opened up my player, played the DVD, then went back to smart ripper, loaded up the dvd, and this time no error message... So I stopped my dvd player, started ripping, all was good until it got to about 29%, it started saying "searching key" with a progress bar that would never stop incrementing... The DVD drive is still being accessed, but there is no more ripping taking place during this time... Whats the problem?

    Thanks,
    -Ramon

I hope you're only ripping to back up a DVD.

Mike, smart ripper seems to work really well, haven't had a problem that I havent found the solution to yet... Actually, I've got several reasons why i'm ripping my DVD's... One, is just to try it. Second, was I needed an excuse for a bigger hard drive, and just today I purchased a 60GIGer and also because mpeg encoding is VERY processor intensive, and this was a good way to test out the stability of my system. Oh, and finally... It could lead to an excuse for a new processor as well... Seeing that the XP processors have the SSE instruction set... It should finish up a little quicker than my TB 1.333

Myself, I purchase a lot of movies on studio release VCD. It's easier than ripping DVDs plus they copy just like any other CD. The audio is only mono and the quality is about that of VHS.

Unless the movie seems to be something that actually can benefit from DVD, I'm satisfied with VCDs. Plus the cost is usually, but not always, about 1/3-1/2 the price of a DVD.

I just bought "Don't Say A Word" for $10! Studio release. The item is gray market in the US, as the disc was intended for distribution in Asia. Quite frequently, I can still get movies that are being shown in American theatres on VCD...especially those with Asian actors.
