Hi, wasent really sure where else this might have belonged, but oh well. I have a Dell D1226H 19 in. monitor for my computer and recently I've been some lines all across the screen from side to side. They sort of move up and down. As far as a can tell its mostly only for a while after I turn the screen on, and its not terribly bad, just pretty annoying some times. Can anyone tell me what might be the cause? Heh, it may be age, not sure if that might cause it, but i think the screen is from around 1998. Thank you. |

If it is two lines, evenly dividing the screen it is normal. Those are wires inside the tube that do something to stabilize, or otherwise improve the picture. They will move with vibration, and also respond to the degaussing field that is applied when the monitor is turned on.
It is a little annoying, but when you know it is normal it does not bother you so much.
However, is it more than two lines?
The wires should stay put, except for when the monitor is bumped.

Actually, there's a good bit more then two, and it has only recently started happening. Normally the lines move up.

Well, can you test that monitor on a different pc? I am pretty sure that your monitor is dying...but it would be good to know for sure... |

I think, Dell stuff isn't that good(no offence). I prefer to build my own computer.
I think what said amdkt7 sounds pretty logical, if thats not the case your monitor is dying, i guess.

Ok, so the lines are actually moving. And it is more than 2. I bet they are not perfectly straight either. In this case it means that the monitor is dying, or that it needs to be readjusted. Either way it would be best to replace it.
I have seen that pattern many times, I forget what the circuit is called, but often a capacitor starts getting leaky.
Get a new monitor. And Dell monitors are not bad, they are made by major brand names but get the dell sticker. Often they are the low end, not the best.
I have had mostly good experinces with Dell monitors, but monitors in general go bad randomly. |

Are these thin lines, or more like bands across the screen, maybe an inch or more high? Regular speed, drifting slowly up the screen over the course of a few seconds, with more coming onto the bottom of the screen at regular intervals, or completely random timing and speeds? Are the lines perfectly horizontal, or slanted about 30 degrees? Are they like an area of different contrast/brightness to the rest of the picture, or an actual line of different colour running through the picture on the monitor?

well, heh, actually i havent seen the lines since i created this thread. Im pretty sure they were completly horizontal, pretty thin (thinner then an inch), and they move up slowly. Not really sure though, haha, cant remember it exactly. But, if my monitor is dying, then fortunatly i have the original which is newer... heh, just smaller. |

hey, the lines just happened. Actually they were at about a 30 degree angle, first high on the right side, then high on the left side. Then after this they became smaller, and pretty horizontal. They dont actually move up and down, they just vibrate. It only happened after i turned my monitor back on, and faded away after about 5, probably less, minutes. |

Thin, angled lines are generally frame flyback lines. Those happen when the electron beam doesn't blank properly when it returns from the bottom of the screen back to the top to start drawing the next frame. Horizontal bands drifting up or down the screen can be caused by outside interference amonst other things and may be cured or lessened by using a better shielded monitor cable, a shorter cable, or rerouting the cable. Sometimes. |
