| Crackling sound coming from PSU
Hi guys,
I have an Antec 350 watt PSU and when i load any game there is a crackling sound comeing from it. As soon as i exit the game the sound diappears...... This started happening when i installed my new 6600GT graphics card. I am thinking that maybe i am drawing to much power from the PSU and maybe i need to buy another PSU 400watt to 450watt.....
Please help...... |

Back away from the PC real slow, and call the Fire Dept! only joking....
Sounds like it's trying to draw power that's not there. Have you got a extra power cable for the vid card? Is it plugged in??
That Antec should provide good power across 12V and 5V rails, but it may, as you think, not be enough to power all devices under load. So, if you'vbe powered the vid card correctrly, and it still does it, a new PSU that has more grunt, and good 5V and 15V outputs, should help.
What else is in the system (eg your system specs)? Might help work out what size PSU would be best.
Cheers
Mick

Drawing too much power or not, a power supply should not crackle. That's a defective unit. Return it if possible and get it replaced. |

I wonder if the sound is from the PSU or the system, myself.. If there was arcing going on inside the PSU, you'd expect the PC to lock up.
But, might be a possible faulty unit. In that case, Fire Dept on standby would be a good idea, actually!
Cheers

When I first got my Enermax 350W, it made my Radeon squeal. I put an old 230W Sparkle in and it was fine.
But crackling, yeah, I dunno. I'd be all about getting it replaced. |

Apparently, as seen in another thread, the PCI-Express 6600GTs have no ecternal power connector, only the AGP ones.
And yea, I'd replace that thing

The 6600GT does, in fact, not have an external power cable. Apparently the PCI-Express bus provides enough extra or something. |

CoolerMaster PSU's have had both good and bad reviews I've seen. I think it depends how far you push your hardware, really. If yoiu aren't gonna push a serious overclock on CPU/RAM/vid card, then a CoolerMaster PSU should be fine IMO.
Not a bad price, either...
Cheers
