Who Will Fax Me to Test My Fax Machine?

I have a small peer to peer LAN running two win2K and two win98 machines through a switch and the whole thing accesses the internet via an ADSL modem.

Via an ADSL filter a couple of telephones access the line, too.

At one telephone location there's either an answering machine instead of the phone plugging into the filter (and the phone goes into the answering machine) or there's a fax machine plugged into the filter (and the phone goes into the fax machine).

I want to plug the answering machine into the filter, the fax machine into the answering machine ( as per the instructions that came with the (Lexmark 3 in 1) fax machine) and plug the phone into the fax machine.

Then the whole thing will be set up as I want it.

I need to check that the fax machine will answer on AUTO and on MANUAL, I need to adjust the number of rings and test again, I need to introduce and take out the answering machine. And test again.

But how to test? Who is going to FAX me?

Really I need to FAX myself.

I've looked for free email/fax programmes that I thought I might use but for one reason or another I havn't found one that I can use.

That tcp.int thing looks like a winner but there's no coverage in my area.

Insane though it might sound I haven't a single friend with a fax machine I can ask to send me a few faxes during the testing period.

I'm hoping there might be a test service somewhere out in the world there.

Or maybe some organisation/govt department that automatically will send you a fax on receipt of some simple query - I could use something like that.

Anyone got any clues that might help?

regards,

ab

Most cell phones nowadays can send and receive a fax, maybe you could send yourself a fax using your cell phone?

That's unusual, eh, I clicked on the link in the advisory email and it brought me here but didn't log me in....

I'm not in the States, I'm in Australia.

On Monday I'll check govt departments or somesuch for somewhere that habitually faxes something or other - application forms, maybe.

Unless that cellphone thing works. We've got a couple of cellphones here but we've never noticed the fax feature if it is there... never looked for it... we'll look for it now...

ab

Your setup is my setup. Mine works...yours "should" work also. Any copy/print store would be able to send you a test fax...for a price

Great testing site...

If you happen to need any information about fires, the National Fire Protection Assoc. has a nice fax-on-demand service that can be a handy way to test your fax machine. Their web page is www.nfpa.org/displayContent.asp?categoryID=487

Sorry about the big delay responding, guys.... I don't quite know why it happened.

The 'fax on demand' is the kind of answer I was looking for. Maybe the answer. Except I live in Australia and phoning the States prior to every fax might be a bit cumbersome.

Same prob with using a copy store... I'm at home changing configurations and want a test after every change... would just like to push a button and have it tested...

Problem has gone away for a while - we've moved and don't have a fax machine any more. (I bought two on eBay in the last couple of months and both vendors took my money and didn't deliver.... ).

But I think it is an interesting need that will crop up again when I get another machine. Maybe not for 95% of the time when all is well, but when problems begin that's when you want this ability, to get a quick check on your machine from right there at home before your computer...

Maybe we'll have a cellphone that'll do it by then... maybe our latest cellphone will do it...

Or maybe I'll come across a govt dept in Aus. that faxes stuff, maybe without even a phone call but just click on the item on the web..

thanks for the interest guys... sorry again for the delay...

On your cell phone i believe you have to change the options on your messages to send as a fax...at least i know my phone can be changed to send faxes in an option somewhere, probably in the messaging section of the phone. I've never tried it myself(never needed it) but i expect most phones will have the option in the settings.
