| Another new build advice plz Hi trying to put together a good COM for about £1000. I mostly do reincoding to DVD and play Games. ( Don't want SLi ) Happy to have just one good Graphics card, have throught about AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ but updating Bios a bit worrying. After many weeks checking out forums etc come down to this. What I would really like to know is this hardware compatible with each other and I’m not sure I got the right memory? Was going to go for Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB but seemed cheaper having 2 smaller ones and more GB's. I'm not too technical so any questions keep simple plz. Thank You in advance for any help Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) Heatsink Gigabyte G-Power Pro OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 Dual Channel Platinum Series EL-DDR CAS2 Asus GeForce 7900 GT/2DHT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) 2X Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM Total 640GB Antec TruePower 2.0 550W PSU ( Already Have ) Akasa Eclipse-62 Aluminum Case ( Already Have ) schiz

You should know the basics of computing. This includes working a computer (no kidding!) and knowing how a computer functions.
I would recommend that you buy components from a reliable pc store. Tell them of your venture and they should point you in the right direction.
Many of the problems you’ll come across are only solved by trial and error, but there are many related websites. Try this one- http://www.mysuperpc.com/ |

I would go to www.newegg.com or Monarch Comoputers. Or, Zip Zoom Fly.
The 2 things I would change is the CPU [get a 939 Opteron, especially if you overclock] and get a slightly cheaper CPU and more expensive videocard.
Good thing you don't want SLI, most forum members would have told you not to get it. Not worth the money, IMO. |

What makes it sadder is that you are not the only person who does this.
My advice to schiz is to try http://www.overclock.co.uk/ as in my experience they are pretty good. |

I'm not 100% about the memory though. Someone else should be able to answer that. |

Thx | yes, but if your spending that much on a computer, go for a card like the x1900xt, it would rip apart the card you said you are wanting. check out www.tomshardware.com (for benchmark results etc) if you are having any doubts. |

oh and btw, my personal fav for buying pc parts etc is www.ebuyer.com
its the cheapest i have come across, id recomend getting your parts from that since your also in the UK.
also if i was you, i would go for either the AMD X2 4200+ or the 4400+, they are dual core cpu's, basically meaning your com should never go slow!
for example, you could encode a movie into dvd format, or do virus scans etc while playing on doom 3 with absolutely no slow down what so ever.
