"check mark" is not a common term in Australia, and probably not in the UK either. Not in my dictionary, either.

We would call that a "tick".
Cheers
Mick
PS BTW the wiki for tick contains the codes you want!!

Not all windows apps will let you use Unicode. The key presses should be ALT + [number with a 0 in front]. So for a "tick" it should be ALT + 02713.
If you use MS Word you can use the Insert Symbol on the Menu to go to either Symbol or Wingdings (both have a "tick"). I think you can even map key strokes using that (which will probably be only specific for MS Word then). If you have MS Word and want to insert a "tick" into another app that doesn't recognise the Unicode then you can use copy and paste (copy it in Word, paste into other app).
Cheers
Mick
edit: Typical M$ different standards.
Just tried it in MS Word using Symbol font - you have to type Alt + 2713 - no leading 0.

Looks like you are using the wrong fonts.
If you have System font loaded, that will do it.

It's alt + v
I'm on an English keyboard and I can make a check mark symbol by pressing ALT + v.
Looks like this:

Hope that helps.
