Reg File Entry Just Opens Notepad

Hey all, long time since I have posted . Hope everyone is doing well. Not sure what i did, rather- which app changed my ability to simply double click a RegFile and have it automatically entered into the registry.

I tried to doubleclick coolbits- both 1 and 2.0 and they simply launch notepad. In days past, double clicking would result with it automatically being entered. How do I restore this feature? Aside from coolbits, my internet speedtweaks and all others dont work, just open notepad. I have entered them manually, so they are now present, but searching to restore this feature so I dont have to manually enter anymore, lol.

    Input and fixes appreciated!

Try changing the file association in Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - File Types (that's in win2k, but it's fairly similar in winXP). I presume the file type would be .reg - you'll need to check the coolbits files and see.

I think just deleteing the current entry that makes it open notepad should work, if there is not entry to add of the registry.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

Thanks, Mick, that worked halfway. I deleted it then when I tried the double click, got the 'dont know what to do' popup from windows. So, I clicked on 'make new' typed in reg in the entry box then selected advanced and chose from the looooooong list 'reg entries.' Worked like a charm.

    Thanks for the Right Direction!

Oops, seems I was premature. I double clicked and it opened the message 'are you sure you want to add this to the registry' message, but when I confirm, I get 'cannot import, error opening the file, there may be a disk or file system error.'

    any thoughts anyone?

Just right click on the file and select "Merge"

And it's a safety issue to not have it add to registry when clicking.
Imagine clicking on one you didn't want to? or even worse not knowing you did?

Hi, I do have the merge option, however, upon reboot, the registry remains unchanged.

I appreciate the safety option, however, that it what the message- 'are you sure you want to add this setting to the registry' option is for . I run System Mechanic 6, I am wondering if it or XPAntiSpy changed the ability to do this. They are the only two proggies I run that I imagine could have changed something.

Well maybe it will be someone else on your machine that might. Either way I'd say it's the xpantispy. I tried it and I lost the right to edit registry. Said i didn't have admin rights. Even though was signed on as admin.....and I don't recall ever checking a box having that feature. I deleted the antispy. All seem like gimmicks to me...but I try them for laughs anyway. Funny how this program is installed.........like someone is gonna change settings every day?

Hey there, thanks all who replied. Got it figured out- was a couple things. Not sure why it defaulted to Notepad, but Mick was on the right path, I jsut didnt have the path right, literally.

After reading this article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=187316 I followed the suggestions. Still nothing. Today at work, I realized I have my 'My Documents' folder, install program folders and various other folders like music and pics on a seperate partition that is formatted and not part of the Windows File System to keep clutter down. I copied one of the reg entries into a Temp folder in C: and viola, it worked. Merging also works. So the RegEntry to be input needs to reside inside the Windows File System.

There ya have it. Thanks all for the direction and input!
