| need help my wifes computer is going bazerk
my computer keeps shuting down and restarting by itself , sometimes it restarts and stays open for a few mins than it shuts down , other times it restarts and shuts down even before I get the window restart display. I think its a virus ,cause one time it stayed open for a while , I clicked on turn off computer and than click again turn off computer to shut it down . the computer shut down , but few min later it restared by itself , this is crazy no when we shut down manuly it should stay off till we reopen it ourself . Also what I noticed once , was when the computer restarted , ( I have sygate firewall ) it told me some program was trying to access the internet , I wanted to write it down but it shut down . Maybe its a virus or some electronic problem with the power supply. But if it was the power supply when it would restart it would have to tell me that windows was shut down incorrectly and it does some kind of back up test or so . instead in my case when it reopens it does exactly like ( when we click on restart computer does a proper shut down )did anyone ever have this problem . I hope I explain myself for someone out there to understand me lol. |

Could you list your system specs. Specifically your PSU with watts, amps on 12V, and manufactuer.
Most likely a power supply issue. If you want you can download "Everest Home Edition" and tell us how stable your 12V is. Everest will also tell you every part in your computer in case you do not know!
Also, you could try booting up in safe mode. Also, Start > Progrmas > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore to an earlier date when the computer ran good.

I agree with carl33p. Not to sound high & mighty, but novice users tend to think most every computer malady is caused by a computer virus. The information isn't complete, but in this situation I would look at the hardware and rule out any problems there first. It's all a process of deduction. By eliminating what does work, you will eventually come to what doesn't work. Then you fix it

Hello,
You're right I might have jumped the gun a little, but however I've never seen a computer turn itself on without either pressing the power button. or a program telling it to do so (besides wake on lan). Hope you get everything sorted out. Take Care. |

I built a computer for my youngest daughter a little over a year ago. AUSU mobo and AMD 2500+. She used it for her schoolwork, internet and a few games. Worked fine for about a week, and then it started to reboot randomly. Went through the usual suspects. No heat problem, did the memory and video swaps. All checked clean. Final suspect was the power supply. It was a brand new ANTEC which is a brand I almost use exclusively. Never had a problem with them, but there's always a first time. It was just bad right off the shelf. Got an RMA from Newegg and got a new one which is doing just fine. Even hooked a new cpu, video card and mobo into it last week, because my daughter loves playing SIMS 2 now.
The power supply is usually my first suspect in restarting problems, especially with most off-the-shelf already assembled computers. They are stocked with cheap power supply units and are borderline underpowered. Add a 2nd harddrive and boom, you got a power problem issue. In my daughter's case, I had a top brand boosting 500 watts and thought it couldn't possibly be the problem, but it was. Never rule anything out.

I've also seen it happen many times when the emotherboard goes bad... specifically in the dell optiplex gx270s. the motherboards capacitors would start bulging and eventually burst... but the symptoms were generally the same as the above mentioned. I've also seen it in other models but the 270's seemed to have it worst. |
