| Windows Live Messenger Defrag Problem
Has anyone else had Windows Live Messenger kill their defragmenter? I have never seen the message "some files could not be defragmented" before, but after the install of Windows Live Messenger, it says it everytime. I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I ran defrag on another formatted hard drive, it defragged fine, until I installed WLM on it, and got the same "some files could not be defragmented" message. I wouldnt normally worry too much about this, but the fragmentation only gets worse. When you look in the window to see what files could not be defragmented, it shows no files. Very strange.
XP Home
AMD64 4000+
ASUS A8N32SLI Deluxe
2x eVGA GeForce 7800GT 256
2x1GB Corsair XMS Platinum
Seagate 120 SATA
Liberty 620W PS

Thanks for the reply. That was the first thing I did, unfortunately it did not work. As much as I hated to do it, I went ahead and reformatted. The fragmentation was progressively getting much worse. All is well now, but I will not download Windows Live Messenger until this problem is figured out. I did find that others have experienced this same problem, but nobody had a fix other than reformatting. |

Apparently this is the problem...WindowsLiveMessenger installs a new service 'Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader' which messes with the 'C:\$Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J' metadata system file. From what I understand, it causes metadata files to fragment. They say to disable startup of Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader in Services. I'm afraid to reinstall WLM to test this, as I don't feel like reformatting if it causes problems again. |

For me defragging after a clean install is a long process. First i install XP then i defrag. After that it's a matter of installing all windows updates and defragging again. Then, i install all the programs that i need and i defrag for a third time.
Like i said, it's a long process for me and when it's done i defrag my drives once a week. I have a 100 Gig (3 partitions) and an external 200 Gig (2 partitions) but once it's done it goes flawlessly every week.
Have you try to install Messenger 7.5, not Windows Live Messenger and see if it does the samething. |

This defrag problem cropped up with Windows Live Messenger. As far as reinstalling 7.5, I have no need, as I don't use Instant Messengers. The IM programs were for my kids to chat with, and for now they will just have to do without. I just want to be 100% sure that WLM is the responsible party for this defrag problem. |
