DVD Noob
I just got a another PC with a liteon (SHW-160P65) DVD/RW that has double layer support.
My problem is I don't know what DVD's to by for it?
I did pick up some DVD+R double layer, but the system doesn't seem to identify them. I have been on google and at the PC manufacturer's site, but still haven't really identified what I'm supposed to use.
Can anyone shed some lite on this for me?
Any all all help is appreciated.

I cant seem to find product info on that model. Can you post where you bought it from(a link for it)?
But DVD-r or dvd+r should both be fine. Sometimes combatibility issues arise, and you should just try a different brand.
What burning software are you using?
Also, you might wanna do a firmware update for the drive. Download Everest Home Edition:
Go Computer : Summary and then click the link for your liteon drive and choose firmware update.
EDIT:
Everest is a helpful program to have

carl33p - the burn software was Cyberlink DVD Solutions. It did work using the DVD that was supplied by the PC company. The DVD's that I bought didn't seem to be identified by the software/drive.
Outlaw2001it - I used the link that you supplied, but when I tried to load the firmware it posted a message that the drive was not that type. The firmware load has now identified the drive as SHW-160P6S P9S1.
The only site that I have found anything on this was in a French forum and it didn't seem to have been any solution as of the last posting. At least from what I could understand.
I'm still digging in Google, maybe I'll stumble across something. I'm also writing an email to Liteon to see if they can assist at all.

first, the correct model number is SHW-160P6S
Here's the link to the manufacturer's website for that model:

Also, you may want to consider trying to call up Lite-on or e-mail their support for more assistance. Let them know that you've tried the firmware update from their website and what it said. Also, let them know the brand of the media you are trying to use and the format. They should be able to help you. Good luck.My Rig:

Hello,
Contact Liteon as fpantovich suggested. The link that he gave goes right back to the Link that I gave you earlier for the Firmware. if you're unable to update the Firmware, there maybe another problem. Take Care, and Good Luck.

well, I've always gone with +R as from my comparisons it has more compatibility, but it really doesn't matter as almost all DVD players support both nowadays.

DVD N00b - the results
I finally got hold of the customer support for the PC that the DVD/RW is install in.
Their word is - the the drive is capable of "READING" double layer DVDs, not burning them. Either +R or -R DVDs will work with the drive.
I'm still waiting for an response from Liteon about the drive identification issue and will post what they tell me as soon as they send it to me.
Thanks for all of the suggestions and assistance from everyone.

Actually, I have a SHW160P6S and although I haven't burned any DL on it the Lite-On web site says it will burn + & - DL in addition to reading them.

depends on which revision you have. Revision 04 and 03 can read/burn DL discs, revision 01 and 02 cannot. I'm pretty certain about the numbers, but going on memory, could be that 1-3 can't and 4 can, but I know for certain that 4 can and 1 cannot, the 2 in the middle not quite certain of.

im a noob too but if your DVD burner is dual layer RW...any DVD should work on it...DVD+R,DVD-R,DVD+RW should all work fine on your DVD burner...as for your compatablilty issue...it has happened to me with the imation DVD-R's...my burner is also dual layer but the DVDs seem to not work at all or when played on the computer or a DVD player it skips around a lot even though the disk is not scratched...TDKs never had a problem with me lol...<.<...

The reason I haven't burned any DL in the Lite On is that it is in a computer than I don't often use. I have 4 burners in the computer that I generally use, but I still don't burn DL very often. I'm not a real big Lite On fan. I have a 1693S on my main computer, but I use it mostly as a reader and burn with a Pioneer or BenQ. The main reason that I'm not a Lite On fan anymore is that I have a set top recorder (LVW-5045) with a bad burner in it and Lite on refuses to sell any replacemant parts for it. I have a BenQ 1620 duct taped into it. It works OK, but looks pretty crappy.
