| Modem test ? Test number?
Anybody know of a phone number that I can log onto to test a modem?
I have two 56k USR voice modems and both connect at 28k. My other computer connects at 48-49k(it's a PCI based mdem.
I'd done a lot of trouble shooting and I think it is my isp. My set up is Win98SE, everything is the same as I always set it up. I'v used these modems before, I'm using the same phone lines.
I't possible that I got two bad modems, but I don't think so.
I want to log on to a different number to see what my connection speed is. |

You can always try netzero or another free ISPto see how the speeds compare. |

For testing purposes, try disabling modem/dial-up protocols. May want to write down current settings if you can't remember them. For modem, disable compression & error-control & remove any "extra" settings in its properties in DIAL-UP (not Device manager). In Network properties, dial-up adapter/ advanced, disable point-to-point, IPX-header compression, log on to network & software compression. May want to check "Record a log file for this connection" to get a PPP log to examine -- might tell you something.

I tried netzero. They had three phone numbers for Nashville. I got the same results. 28K to 31K at best.
I have determined that it's an oem modem, USR does not provide drivers for it. It seems to be a dell oem.
The sticker number is 66174900. USR modem identification utility sees it but the product identity field is blank.
These modems came out of some oem computers. There was a driver disk for it, but I have not found it yet. I have used these modems in the past, but it might have been with Win95.
Win98 insists that any driver I have offered it is not as good as the one that it provided. Typical MS, they always think they know best. .
With nothing to lose I flashed on of them to V.90 via a flash program that I found on a russian web site. Now I can't find any drivers that will work yet.
I'm going to continue to work on this this morning. I'd like to figure out what it is.
I have checked all of my settings, they are all normal. I move the computer to a different room and tested it there. I swapped powersupplies, stripped out everything except for the video card.
I think it is a driver issue. I'll continue looking for something on the net. |

No, but I will. I assume you mean a standard driver, not a USR driver from MS. |

I realized that after I posted. I'm not sure if it would work or not. I have an internal hard modem that runs fine w/ it.
I just sent you an email. Check it out.

Ok, I installed the standard 56k v90 driver ignoring MS's bitching. It works pretty good.
Strange though, when I check my connection by hovering the mouse over the modem icon in the systray it reports a connection of 115200 bps. I have never seen anything over 56000 before. Usually its 48000 to 49333 on my main computer.
I tried downloading a file from Matrox to see what kind of speed I would get. I got normal speeds, starting very high 15k then dropping down to settle in at 5k.
I guess I'm going to stop right here. I'm done fooling with this d* thing.
I want to get this computer shipped off to my sister early this week. She will be using it at a college with a network connection, but later she will probably need a modem as well.
Thanks guys for your help. It's been fun. Not to much fun, but a good learning eperience. |

115000 is your com port speed.
Add
S95=1
to your init string (connection-advanced-extra settings box) for your actual connetion speed.
LATER,
