So with the money i have, i don't want to spend too much so i was considering just getting a Gigabyte 8800gts and a new PSU. I already have a p4 3.6. Will that CPU be good enough to run the newer games for a while or should i fork out 400 for a new cpu on top of a new gpu?
Thanks

If you get a 8800GTS, then you will be able to play any game just fine, untill you deside you want a Core 2 Duo.
The P4 will be bottlenecking the 8800GTS, no doubt there, but not to such an extend that you can't play games.
So, best way indeed would be to get an 8800GTS and new PSU, and later down the road, buy a core 2 duo to get it up to full speed.

getting a 8800 with a P4 is a really bad choice. the core 2 duo is much much faster than the P4 which will definatly lag behind the 8800 by a very large gap. its definatly worth getting a c2d in this case either now or in the future. but you might need to get a new mobo as well as older mobos may not be able to support a c2d. what mobo do you have now?

Asus P5B-e
it supports everything. Hrrm yeah just finances at the moment may not be able to get both at the same time.
a mate just told me that the 8900's will be out in a month or so, i may just wait and save my money until then.

well if you are short on cash now then wait til the next batch comes out which will be cheaper and better than the current ones which are hellishly overpriced. then go get a E6300 and a 8900 |

One other question. I currently use 2gb of ddr2 533, is it worth the 350 bucks or so to get ddr2 800, 2gb of course? |

yes ddr2-800 will give you a more noticeable performance increase, but the only reason i will be upgrading from 667 to 800 is because it is bottlenecking my overclock. i guess if i didn't have an OC friendly c2d then i probably would just go out and buy another stick of 667, but 800 is better if you have the money. from 667 to 800 you wouldn't see a lot of difference i'd imagine, but from 533mhz to 800 i guess you would more so (that goes without saying). basically if you have the money, yes get a nice 2gb kit of ddr2-800. you will certainly benefit from it over the 533 stuff you have now. |
