DVD+RW is already the winner, isn't it? |

DVD+RW is crap right now IMHO. DVD+R isn't even available in hardware you can purchase right now.
DVD-R and DVD-RW drives have been available for *years* now from Pioneer. Pioneer's DVD-R/DVD-RW drives have won countless awards. They are THE standard when it comes to DVD-R/RW
DVD-R is the most compatible writeable DVD format right now and forever will be.
DVD-RW and DVD+RW will *never* be as compatible as DVD-R until the old installed base of standalone dvd players and pc dvd-rom drives are compeletly removed/upgraded/etc.
Plus its worth mentioning that DVD+R and DVD+RW are NOT DVD FORUM APPROVED STANDARDS!
They are NOT allowed to use the DVD Forum logo on their products, they are NOT allowed to claim their format is compatible with DVD Forum specs.
Personally, I am for the support of open standards like what the DVD Forum has. Supporting a non-approved standard that tries to mask itself as an approved open standard is disingenious to the customer and drives up prices for everyone as you now have to be compatible with two types of hardware instead of just one.

The fiasco with DVD+RW manufacturers promising DVD+R capabilities just to sell current drives and now pulling back put them right in my black list.
Personally a look at the two consortiums makes DVD-R/RW look better as they seem (Pioneer) more technology oriented (and more serious) than (retail) market starving big guns at DVD+RW.
After all compatibility is towards DVD-R/RW side (it was the original standard anyway before others took it up by themselves). But even if that wasn't the case, that fiasco did it for me. I hate being milked |

Beter doesn't mean it will be getting THE standard:
BETAMAX, video2000, DCC all lost it to lower standards. |

I vote for DVD-R and DVD-RW just for compatibility reasons. There's already more DVD players out there that can do -R and -RW. If I burn -R and -RW and hand out media to freinds and family, chances are it wil work for more people than had I gone with the +RW
They waited to long to try to push the +RW and change the standard mid stream.
BTW...good reason to buy a DVD player with firmware upgradeability (not that it may solve this particular problem, but at least you can dodge more of the same type of scenerios)
Some posted here way back .... http://www.vcdhelp.com . I love this site! Take a look at the DVD players compatibility list!
<edit> thanks for the correction brandon!<edit>

Link Correction: http://www.vcdhelp.com/
I've been wanting to get a writeable DVD drive for a while now, but now this thread confuses me even more. I had absolutely no idea that there was a distinction between DVD-RW and DVD+RW... lol...
Time for some research on my part.

They may be heading towards supporting all three, usless someone (DVD Forum) can sort out a good standard.
World's First Multi-Write DVD Drive
*Compatible with all write-type DVD and CDs recognized by DVD Forum* http://www.lge.com/about/rnd/news/ne...e=2&p_seq=2030
Article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/22686.html
Model number is GMA-4120B. I don't think it's out yet.
I have a DVD-RAM at work, it's a great backup device (all it does). But of course, I would also like to write regular DVDs. That's why I was kind of excited about the Multi-writes coming out. Plus they they seem to have a decent retail price. |
