If you choose Upgrade when installing it will take your XP and change it to Vista but if you choose a full install you can do it on a second partition and have a Dual Boot XP/Vista. |

Yes, the upgrade simply means you are upgrading from.a legit copy you already own. In fact, I believe the EULA says you actually have to keep the old copy of windows XP you upgrade from. Whether you install a new copy or upgrade over the top, it will ask for evidence that you have the original windows XP before it let's you get to far.
Bear in mind of you want to keep some of the data on your drive you should back it up before installing a fresh copy, as it will basically wipe everything out.
The real question in my mind is: why would you want to upgrade a perfectly good copy of windows XP Pro to Vista?
Cheers
Mick
edit: oh, you mean install it in a different PC and keep using XP Pro on another? No, that is illegal in terms of the EULA. Very illegal.

i mean they must somehow disable your XP cd key or something, right??? i don't think "hoping people will do the right thing" is a good way to keep them from doing it....? |

I bought a new hard drive and used the "upgrade" home premium version to do a clean install without XP installed. The trick is you install it once, don't activate it and then do another install from that. I know it sounds wierd but it works. I really don't understand the upgrade thing, I paid $159 for the upgrade version at Staples, yet anyone can buy a full OEM version on places like newegg for $119. I just didn't want to wait.

There are lots of ways out there to get around most of the roadblocks M$ puts in the way of getting value for your money on Vista. The Livingston/Langa newsletter has had articles on most of them as has the News section here.
