Saving up my money for a trip out to California this summer, so I'm putting together a system from parts I have around the house. A friend ordered the wrong mobo for his 2-Core Duo and gave it to me. It's a really nice ABIT board (AW8D) and it will work with the Pentium D 840 I currently have in a cheap mobo. Here's the new hardware I plan on getting from Newegg next week.
PCI Express card (Getting away from my old AGP)
DDR2 dual channel memory (Getting away from my old 184 pin PC3200)
The PCI Express card is a Leadtek Winfast PX7300GT. It has 128MB of DDR3. The reviews are good and it's only 83.99.
For memory, I'm going with a matched pair of Corsair DDR2-800 (2x512). This will cost me 119.00 and I'll still have 2 memory slots left.
Since my Pentium D only has an 800 FSB, is this memory overkill? I could go with DDR-675, but if the DDR-800 will give me an extra boost, I don't mind the additional cost. By next winter, I'll be passing this computer to my son and build myself a 2-Core Duo machine. Right now, using the hardware I already have, the new memory and PCI Express card will only set me back a couple of hundred dollars and I can trash the cheapy mobo I'm using now. I would appreciate any comments.
