Have a .flv file I need to convert to send to others not familiar with same. I need a format such that Windows Media will open as a default. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Convert it to MPEG-1 if wide compatibility is desired. Windows has shipped with a standard MPEG-1 decoder for many years.

BTW, you could also simply suggest people use VLC to play the FLV file.

VLC is a standalone encapsulated media player for many operating systems (Windows included) with support for many popular formats, meaning it does need to install multiple DirectShow decoders directly into the Windows. While not always the most efficient player, VLC is a great solution when distributing content to people inexperienced with the installation of multimedia codecs.
