    XP upgrade (from win98)

I did a clean install of XP Pro on an old PC that had WIn98 on previously [128 SDRAM DIMM 168 pins].

A lot of programs are still installed ("installed"? no - inside Prog Files folder actually - taking up valuable HD space) even tho they don't show in Add/Remove Programs.

When I attempt to run some of the progs that *were* inslalled (when it wasa Win98 box), *some* run OK, but other progs complain about registry entries [no suprise there] - normally I'd do a simple unistall via "uninstall.exe, but most don't have that option - what do I do (remember I thought I was starting from scratch - [end result - more disk space]...)

When a program doesn't have have a "uninstall.exe" what's the best way to completely unisnstall / delete from to pC (Prog Files? Run Reg Edit and find them individually?) Help pls.

Testing some... just to see what happens.
I have attempted to run some of the progs and most of them dont run, but a few do (Photoshop runs OK [was installed in "C:\WinApps\photoshop")
I'd like to keep the installed programs that are installed OK rather than uninstall then reinstall. Whats the best option?

My reason for the above problem is that my 80 Gig drive is using 8 Gig for Doc/Settings - yes ) can buy a bigger driver but...
Settings and Douments is using 8.25 Gig (far more than programs shown in Add/Remove Programs which usually gives an approximate average of hard disk space used [don't it?]).

The upshot is, I'd like to unistall everything that isn't shown in Add/Remove Programs (I'll use their uninsyall.exe or delete and clean up if neccessary).

I guess my concern is... after removing unavailable programs from Add/Remove will I regain the HD space or shouild I fornmat the HD and start afresh with XP install?

    Advice please.

    CCleaner will do you good!

Go into the "Tools" Tab, and there is a uninstall option, which you just find the program and delete whatever you want. And there is also a Startup Registry editor, that removes the unwanted on startup.
Just thought about this though, I'm not sure win98 supports CCleaner. You may have to check for that...
    Good luck, Hope I helped!

You did a "clean install" or an "upgrade" which is??

A clean install is a fresh install from a formatted disk, sounds like you did an upgrade that didn't upgrade too well. Honestly if the info isn't needed I'd just run kill disk or something similar and start with a fresh new install

XP Pro minimum specs are 64 to install and 128 to run. Should run fine with nothing installed to modify the startup. And i wouldnt recommend running more than one or two things at a time and nothing big like photochop or Norton's.

installing XP on a system with 128mb of ram is a very bad idea... you want minimum 512mbs. even if you stripped all your programmes down to the absolute absolute bare minimum leaving only essential XP programmes running it would still be really sluggish.. there would pretty much be 0 difference from before actually. i would just put win2k back on it

When XP was first released, there were MANY computers with 128 megs of ram (Still plenty in the corporate world with 256 too). Running just the OS wont be a problem, yes it will run a bit sluggish but it should work just fine. Apps may need more than 128 but the OS itself doesnt need more than 128.

Since the original question was about HD space, Installing as an upgrade keeps original copies of the Win2k OS so you can uninstall and go back. A Fresh install will use only about 1.5 gigs for the OS. You may want to go back to Win2k for performance and look into an external storage or adding another HD to your computer.

Nemo what the heck are you reading, he was using win98 not 2k He's got an 80gig hard drive why the world would he need to add an external just to use XP? He just wanted to regain the space used by the files that seem to be left over from the upgrade/install there was no mention of being out of HDD space!!

If your PC is anything like my friends PC which has XP on a comp designed for 98, you will want to kill someone.

I recommend buying a old dell for $20

Gimmie a break... Go actually use a computer with 128MB of ram and Windows XP SP2 on there and tell me it's NOT slugish. It isn't enough, no matter what the system requirments state, it will be very sluggish. This is from personal experience, not preaching what I simply read online. Sure, it'll boot and you can use it, but it will run like shit. Period.

EDIT: An OS without apps is useless... How many people do you know that don't use any apps?

I don't use apps until my computer boots, then I use them all the time.

You have 1/8 of the RAM that would making running XP the best it could be. Downgrade before you lose your mind.

So you didn't know this would run like crap? Why not just buy a P4 with at least 512 mb memory?
