One monitor freezes system still works ok

Hi,

I hope the title isn't too long.

I have a monitoring and alarm system where we have two workstations on the system.

One screen has just frozen and does not respond, a reboot of the operating system just returns the same screen display. The other one continues to work normally.

Any suggestions as to why one monitor is doing this and not the other?

Hi,

I apologise for being a bit vague.

This system is on a ship that is currently steaming full speed for the Suez Canal. I was sent a request for help by the Chief Engineer who is onboard at present. He has been unable to get a response from the suppliers( It's a new ship and still under warranty)

The system is one where there are two master PC's. The data from most of the Technical things goes straight to the one mounted in the ECR (Engine Control Room), this is connected via ethernet to the other one on the Bridge ( It gets some tech data directly from the fwd engine room)

The Master System in the ECR is the one having the trouble with it's local monitor. The machine and all it's functions can be accessed from the bridge unit.

The paperwork I have here (in Germany) doesn't give any info about the OS but I can say it is a windows type display as there are buttons, drop down menus etc.

I have asked the C.E. to give me more info so will hopefully be able to post some additional info soon.

Does it use a separate video card?

Hi,

Yes, each master unit has it's own video card, journal ( log) and alarm printer setup.

I have not had any more info from the ship nor a read receipt for what I sent earlier, this might be because they have slipped out from under the VSAT Footprint and are temporarily without their internet connection.

Hi,

I got a reply from the C.E.

He turned the machine in the ECR off and wiggled the cards and all connections, re stared and it all seems to be working ok locally.

I also found out why the supplier never responded, the guy who deals with our company is on sea trials with another ship and doesn't have access to e mail or phone during the voyage- great customer service ah?

Thanks for your replies guys.

When I get back on her as Chief in 2 weeks I will blow out the PC first with a can of air then the departing Chief Engineer using start air.
