With you doing video work, I think a Quad Core would be better for you. That's pretty much what they were made for. It cuts down render times by a lot. You can get those for the same price as your Wolfdale that you have picked out also. |

i had considered them. I only do some some hard core rendering several times a year and i do not mind letting it go overnight. i want a chip that will perform well under the usual cirmumstances of handing lage picture files and multiple programs being ran at once. One of the main things that turned me off to the quad core was the fact that not all programs and games utilize the full capability of the chip.

This will be changing over time. The Quad is more future proof because of that.
But I understand what your saying.
On my system, I normally have 2-3 IM programs going, Music playing, FF open, some kind of download, and Folding(which uses all cores alone) and I can even jump on a game, and all is silky smooth. That's why I went with a Quad. I saw a big jump in just performance when I got this and moved to Vista. That's just my experience.. |

I can understand. Just know your not the only one in that boat. People that spent $2k 3 years ago are pissed that their PC's are already out of date.
IMO, this is one of the most expensive hobbies to get into. At least, if you want to stay up to date all the time.
But at some point, you gotta just settle for what works. Even though it's not the top of the line machine.
And I can give you the other side of the Quad debate also.
By the time most programs are multi-threaded, there will be faster Quad cores out on the market. Even Octo-core CPU's will be hitting soon.
Either way, for video work now, I myself see no reason not to get a Quad core.
Again, Just IMO.
EDIT:
Found the PSU for $104 after MIR. PC POWER and COOLING S75QB Silencer 750W Quad Power Supply (Black) Retail at ZipZoomfly
Also in Red and Blue

Karma might be the only person here at TIMO with no faults. Not sure, but it is possible.
