    Arrow Programming

Hey, I have been looking around the web, and I am trying to find a good programming language to learn for the first time. I need something free and relatively easy. I have a little bit of experience in Cog (a programming language used in JK DFII that is very similar to C++), but that is it. -Jon

Well there ya go. C++ is pretty easy to learn if you get a decent book. And as long as you keep at it with the book you can teach yourself! Practice makes perfect and that is very true with any programming language. I took Java for a while and the only way to learn is by DOING.

I've also heard that Visual Basic is a good one to start with.

I took one look at VB and said "I'll never be able to do this." Two weeks later I was writing a fully functional MUD world generator that interfaced with a relational database. <shrug> My buddy (who knows almost every language Michigan Tech offers) told me to learn C++ or Java next. Of course I'm too lazy, but hey... Most important is to go to the book store and get yourself a book you can UNDERSTAND. Some of the reference books and tutorials assume you know other languages already.

And if you get stuck on something, don't be afraid to ask about it here. There are a few around who seem to know everything about code.

I have heard a little bit about something called Python. NE1 heard anything about that? It might not be too hot, though, cuz I heard it was also used by some hackers. 8-| -JON

So C++ or VB eh? Hmmm....

I bet there's a "C++ For Dummies" book out there!

Python is mostly a scripting language, I believe. Like Perl or Ruby. Handy for web stuff, and server scripting, but not as a full fledged programming language. Then again, I could be wrong.

    Martoch - There really is.

Actually Python is also the scripting language from what I understand that Redhat uses for the installation process of RedHat Linux

Uh . . . still having technical difficulties. Apparently, I need to install a whole bunch of OCX files and MSIEXEC.exe. I will probably be a while before I get everything up and running again. -me

Umm all of it should be included in the install.
    Maybe need to reinstall..
What OS and SP are you running?
If you're using VB and VC++ make sure to get the visual studio service pack!

Actually, I found some sites that have the files I need, so I got RICHTX32.OCX, TABCTL32.OCX, and COMDGL32.OCX, but I still need MSIEXEC.exe.

I got the general idea that these are all Windows Installation files, like they are needed to install certain programs. -me
