A little common sense would dictate that a DVD is not going to play in "just" a CD player

use the current CD writer to enjoy the DVDs . | Not gonna happen. You need a DVD-ROM drive at the least. CD will play in a DVD-ROM drive, but a DVD wont play in a CD-ROM drive. |

just kidding
to original poster, just buy a $15-20 DVD Burner, you'll retain all your CD Burning capabilities, CD Reading, & gain DVD Burning plus DVD Reading abilities with it, uninstall the old CD burner, & put the DVD Burner in its place.
very easy to do. if need help, post back.
