| Transfering CPU to other Mobo
I wish to transfer my Intel Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz CPU from a Dell Dimension 8200 mobo to a Dell Dimension 8300 mobo.
I need some advises: What is the simplest and safest way to remove the CPU form the old mobo. Can I just pull it off, or must I pry it off, if so, how can I do it without damaging it (like bending the pins etc.) ?
In installing: how do I align it to the new socket, how much pressure to insert is advisable? If any pins are bent, how to straighten them out?
Do I need a heat sink paste? If so, where can I get just a one time application? How to apply it?
Any advise to carry out the transfer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

There will be a lever on the CPU socket, called a ZIF lever (Zero Insertion Force). It is so you don't have to pry the CPU.
To remove the CPU, take off the heatsink/fan, then lift the ZIF lever. The cpu should come out.
TO put the CPU in (assuming it is compatible with the other motherboard), lift up the ZIF, align the CPU pins with the holes, put in the CPU (no force needed, it should drop in), then put down the ZIF, and put on the heatsink/fan (with Thermal Paste, just a tiny drop should cover the CPU, make sure to wipe the CPU). |

#43fan. Excellent instructions. It seems rather easy. Thanks again. |

Hi, Charleshx:
The 1.7GHz CPU will not work in an 8300. The 1.7GHz is a 400MHz FSB. You need a CPU with a 533MHz or 800MHz FSB. The Prescott is the best CPU for an 8300 and they are not terribly expensive. |
