| I would like your recommendations!
Hello there! I've volunteered to help a co-worker upgrade his computer...it's pretty much extinct...so this upgrade = building a whole new system. I'm looking for a decent system, not the top of the line anything but something that the average e-mail user/internet surfer/occasional Word user will enjoy. He said his son occasionally plays games, but not many newer ones. I'm going to do my own research of course, but I know a lot of you probably have good thoughts on what to buy. Nothing fancy, just a good (pretty fast) stable system.
So will you please recommend a Socket A motherboard that will accept an Athlon 1-1.4Ghz...preferably with onboard LAN and audio. Also, how about a decent 32mb video card? I really don't think he'll need a 64mb unless you know of one that isn't too much more in price and worth buying. He's going to be using Windows XP, so I recommended 256mb of RAM for a stable system. Ok, it's your turn...
Very thankful!
Mike

| Here's a great card for $46. Even has TV out, for when he and his son get adventurous...
As for the boards, I've been out of the loop just long enough to not be able to answer that one, so I will leave it up to others.
I would go with the GeForce 2 MX though for video as it is inexpensive and a good card. I have one and it does everything I need (2D and 3D). The Asus is probably one of the more expensive cards, but is a great card at $46.
Good luck

Thank you both--great prices, he'll love that part! It was actually kind of nasty when I opened his case...he literally had a layer of dirt/dust on the bottom. I told him I would help him build a new computer if he promised to clean his system out once in a while. I don't want to waste my time researching/ordering/building only to have dust bunnies take over.
YUCK!!! |

hahaha...nice little picture of the dust bunny....if that can be considered a bunny at all. I think those are great suggestions so far so go with those! And stick to Maxtor/WD/Seagate HDDs. Dont want him killing you if he gets an IBM cause that thing'll go bad.

I took this from another thread. It shows price comparisons in your part of the states at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Kmart, Office Depot, Office Max, Radio Shack, Sears, Staples, Target, WalMart, Wards and select local retailers http://www.salescircular.com/ |
