Grab Vista 64-bit otherwise you won't be able to use all of your RAM, the OS will see the 4GB, but it won't be able to use all 4GB, probably between 3 & 3.5GB. Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit English 1pk DSP OEI DVD for System Builders - Operating Systems
the power supply is WAY WAY over kill... all you really need is something in the 600-700W range max, and to be honest with the current list, even a good 500W should be enough.
if your not going to run Crossfire, I'd look into a board with one PCI-E 2.0 16x slot instead, might save some with that... the current board is crossfire compatible, but the card you have selected is an SLI compatible card, SLI & Crossfire are not compatible... if your thinking of doing SLI you'll need an SLI capable Motherboard...
even though the 9800GTX+ is a good card with that motherboard I'd look at grabbing a single Radeon HD4850. leaving it open to grab a 2nd down the road for Crossfire.
for PSU, something like this should be plenty, if not more than one should need... has a single 60Amp 12V Rail, more than enough for a good SLI or Crossfire setup: Newegg.com - PC Power & Cooling Silencer PPCS750QBL 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI NVIDIA SLI Certified (Dual 8800 GTX and below) CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies
$125 after rebate. (might as well grab the combo deal with the free 4GB USB flash drive)
a good HD4850 to get might be something like this... Newegg.com - ASUS EAH4850 TOP/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
highest core & memory clock of the 512MB models listed, bit cheaper in price than the 9800GTX+... should offset the bit more price of the PSU over the one you had selected... over all should come to close to same price as what you had...
LOL, added up your list of parts, plus the few replacements I listed, & it comes to $1384.89 before shipping & rebates ($110 total in mail-in rebates) |

I would change out the power supply. Not because it's overkill (overkill is good in the PSU area IMO) but because of the name on it. With your budget, there is no reason to get that Rosewill. You could get a Corsair, OCZ, Silverstone, PCP&C.. Lots of better choices out there..
As far as the board, cpu, gpu combo, I like it. These 9800's are no joke. They max out everything they touch. And the + models are on par with the 4850's, so I see no reason to change that setup. And if you want to factor in OCing, the Nvidia card will clock more 90% of the time.
If your wanting to save some $, check into the this; Newegg.com - Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 2500:1 - LCD Monitors
It's what I'm looking at right now. Very good LCD for the price. The contrast is awesome.
With the money you save on that, you can get a decent KB/Mouse setup. You'll be hating that wireless kit you have picked out in a month, maybe less. Especially if your a gamer. A GOOD KB/Mouse makes all the difference. Trust me.
And I gotta ask. Why that case? I understand the case is totally personal preference, but man, I gotta tell you.. That is a fugly case..
EDIT:
Just looked at the list, and realized you have a P45 board picked out. You should probably get the ATI card then. There would be a better upgrade path for you later..
Sorry

Swap out that LG dvdrw for a Samsung... trust me... we bought 6 of those for our office machines and they are all garbage, we ended up returning the whole order and getting the samsungs we used to get with no problems...
Sorry but I gotta agree, thats a fugly case... grab a cheaper antec 300 and pop in 2 blue LED 120mm's and call it a day...
It's cheaper, cools better, and wont get you beat up on the playground, like that other case will
Even if you add cards, drives, etc and upgrades to that rig, your still looking at under 400W... THIS Silverstone just went on sale, and cant be beat bang for buck even at the regular price...

thanks everyone for the replies.
Case - I will change it out...was looking for something with good cooling and led - suggestions (the antec 300 is soooo plain, not sure the kid would like it)?
rwdvd- I will go with JPMiller's suggestion (samsung - same price anyways)
Monitor - I'll change it to the Acer - per KarmaKiller
Power Supply - well I thought more was better - but if 400w will do the trick - then I'll change to the silverstone (will that really cover it?)
I'm confused with the comments on the video card/mother board - am I changing one or both - or leaving it alone?
Last of all - I thought there were all kinds of compability issues with vista 64 bit....no? that was the main reason I selected 32 bit. He does have quite a bit of software and I was trying to go with a version of windows that wouldn't force him to trash it because of compability. |

good rig mate. I have pretty much built my rig for crysis, and i must say that budget wise that machine will run everything nicely- except crysis. I use the game as my benchmark and ive spent a good 2.5 grand australian on my cmoputer and i still get a chunky fps on very high sometimes
truth is nvidia and intel are really optimized for crysis. if your wanting something that wil run it well i would stick with NVIDIA 9800gtx+ as i know from experience. if you can afford it look at getting a NVIDIA 260, or a ATI 4870.
with your ATI 4850 you can expect most of the time to be playable at medium settings with no AA.

jump on the net and have a look for yourself- Crysis runs alot better on NVIDIA/INTEL compared to anything in comparsion for AMD or ATI.
my 9800gtx+ ran crysis alot better than my 4850 before i upgraded to a 4870X2. the 4870X2 might be too extreme in your case- especially for your son, so try and grab a 4870 or 9800gtx+ if you can. |

Tully, i have a 4850, play it at 1680x1050 with all settings on high with no AA and i pull about 40+ FPS consistently. Get the 4870 or the 4850, they are the best bang for the buck right now.

I have that exact case, and to say its fugly is your choice, but it cools like a beast. It is rock solid and very well built. It comes with 4 fans, 2 side, 1 back one top. It can take a nother one in the front too.
I'm running a DS3L with a 3.2Ghz P4 clocked at 4Ghz 2GB of ram oced to 1066 and an X1300 pro using this Newegg.com - MASSCOOL 8WA741 92mm Ball CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks I never have heat issues. the case is loud though... bu you get used it. It is an excelent case. |
