| Building my first desktop
So I've decided to build a new desktop computer for myself rather than buy a new laptop. I want to build a very high-end gaming system while still getting a good bang for the buck. In other words, I don't necessarily need the absolute top if it doesn't perform for the price.
The problem is, I know very little about the specific parts in terms of which is better than which. This is where I was hoping to get some help. I'd like to stay under $1k for the system...this does not include monitor, keyboard, or mouse.
Also, I want to be able to upgrade this system in the future rather than have to buy a complete new one if that makes any difference.
I'm not sure what other info I can give to be helpful. Please give me the reasoning for your choices so I can learn the differences between these many choices.
Finally, if anyone would be kind enough to chat with me and help me out on AIM I'd be very appreciative.
Thank you. |

Ok thank you.
Some specific questions I have so far are should I go with a duo core or a quad? Also, which video card would be best? |

Dual cores are best at gaming ATM. Quad core benefits you if you encode/decode video/audio, or if your a heavy multi-tasker. They also are a bit better for "future prrofing" your PC. Basically meaning, the Quads will handle everything fine now, and a couple of years from now even too.
As far as the video card, that all depends on budget mainly.
I'll throw together a list for ya real quick. |

I'll throw together a list for ya real quick. | Can you define heavy multi-tasker? I tend to have many internet windows open, email, itunes, utorrent, limewire, AIM, etc open at the same time but I don't know if this qualifies. I don't really do video editing. Based on this would the Dual be best? If I wanted to run a game like Crysis which would be best?
Also, can you explain to me SLI and Crossfire a little bit? It sounds like if I want a computer that can be easily upgraded in the future this is the way to go.
Thanks for your time. |

Thanks for your time. | I think the quad would show it's worth. You can do everything you just listed, plus burn a dvd, watch a movie, and be playing a game if you really wanted to. Quads are nice to have.
As far as SLI and Crossfire. It's basically the same thing. It just mean that you have 2 cards running, hooked together by a bridge, that boost your graphics cards performance. SLI is the Nvidia version, Crossfire is the ATI version.
Right now, there are no motherboards that support both. It's either one of the other, and you have to have a motherboard that supports whatever you choose.
Which in my list above, I always add that in, as a upgrade option if nothing else. So if you stick with the "Nvidia system" or "ATI system" I posted above, your good to go. Just add in a QUALITY power supply, that is very important. Then add a second GPU. |

How do I choose between ATI and Nvidia? I really don't have any personal preference. Which would you suggest?
Finally, is there any way I could chat with you to help iron out some of these questions? Sorry but I'm really new and I want to be able to learn.
Thanks. |
