Advice needed for building a gaming computer

This is my first time attempting to build a PC and I don't know too much about it. So I was wondering if someone could help me out with figuring out how I can get the "biggest bang for my buck". (around $1000)

Since I'm a big gamer I'm looking for a computer that will support my gaming wants with clean game and movie graphics ( I want to be able to set my resolution on high on any game without any lag).

I'd also want something that doesn't "bottleneck", overheat, or cause much noise.

I do know that I want at least 4 gb of ram, at least 512 mb in a video card, at least 3.0 ghz, and a fast processor.

So far I've come up with this much:

Video Card - H4870 1GB: Newegg.com - ASUS EAH4870/HTDI/1G Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

PSU - Corsair 650w: Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

HARD DRIVE - WD 640 gigs: Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives

MotherBoard - P45: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Memory - PC8500: Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

CPU - E8500: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036

OSU - Windows Vista 64 Bit

Does this look like a good setup so far and if not what should I consider changing or adding on?

Also, would it be a waste of money to get a quad processor?

For the most part those are Excellent choices
Someone may suggest some minor tweaks for savings...
But the only thing that jumps out at me is the PSU...
I'm all for overkill, but thats just a waste of money...
This OCZ is plenty of overkill and cheaper BEFORE rebate

most people seem to agree that the higher end dual cores outgame the quads, which are more usefull for encoding and other jobs that utilize more than 2 cores...

Yeah. Other than the PSU those are very good choices if you want a gaming PC. You don't really need PC8500 ram though. It makes hardly any difference in performance. At most a frame or two in games. Save $50 and get this instead
Newegg.com - OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Its not the ram in the graphics card that makes it fast. A slow card will need less ram while a fast card usually needs more. Two cards with 512mb of ram can perform very differently if they have different GPUs.

Well, its really up to you. With the $50 saved on the ram, go for a quad. Although its going to be slower for gaming, CPUs are all so fast nowadays that its really just the graphics card that limits the system. So the quad (depending on which one you get of course) is not really going to slow it down at all. The quad will also only get 'faster' as time passes since more and more programmes are going to be coded to take advantage of multiple cores, giving it an advantage over a dual.

Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

If you can spend an extra $30 you can grab a slightly faster one.

Newegg.com - Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

As a last bit of advice, I suggest you wait a few weeks to get your computer. A whole new Intel platform is coming out in a week or two which will drop the prices of the current stuff. Dont bother with getting a system based on the new platform though as you will probably have to spend a thousnad more for a low end one (which is still going to be blazing fast). Its not worth it just yet.

I hope this isn't a stupid question

I was wondering about if I bought an E8500 dual core processor for the computer I'm building would I be able to swap it out for a quad core processor later?

Yes you would. As long as they are both socket 775, you'll be able to swap..

Motherboard RAM problems

Hey guys, doesn't it matter that the mother board you chose is only compatible with 1200mhz RAM? Or are motherboards backwards compatible with 800? I'm also looking into building and I'm glad to hear that 800mhz ram is fast enough
