Yeah, avi is a very loose file format, an avi file can be encoded in any number of different codecs, you need to find out which codec it's in. If it is in divX then installing the divX codecs from www.divx.com should let you play it in Windows Media Player (although a specialised divX player will be more efficient and possibly support more formats)

Good God!!! Do not get the Realplayer if you can help it. It's absolutely horrid.
All versions of Windows Media Player should play most any video file as long as you got the right codecs installed.

I hate Real Player and i hate Quicktime but i still have them on my comp, the problem is that on lot of sites you can only view the movies in Quicktime, and i have lots of DragonballZ episodes in RM format, although i believe it also works on Media Player.

The Codec Zone
Compressed Formats
Tools
DivX Digest - Software
Codecs Codec Corner Com (if you don't know what codec was used for your video clip, this url has info on how to find that out.)

I had this avi file that wouldn't play in any of my media players. I downloaded Divx 5 and installed it. My media players can now play the file.

Global DivX is nice, but it has some spyware. Best get ad-aware or Spybot running.
