"2. just get a 5.x Ghz for the kitchen."

x2

We got one because we were tired of getting interference every time we used the old 2.4GHz phone and the microwave at the same time.

Have you tried switching the signal frequency in the wireless router? The phone might support a different frequency as well.

Wireless N can operate at 2.4GHz or 5GHz depending on if it's dual band or not.

Linksys.com – Learning Center/Network Basics/Wireless Standards

So a 5.8GHz phone should be fine for any of the technologies as it would be on a different frequency regardless.

And, there you go, it's wireless (RF). You don't have to be concerned only about all the RF devices you have in your home, but about all in your neighborhood. Just think about all the external RF waves bouncing around your home. Even some kid next door with a WiFi headset can cause problems, not to mention the neighbor's microwaves, cordless 'phones, and etc., etc.

One of the easiest ways to correct such a problem is to change the channel in your router. If the first change doesn't work, try another.
