I think you are pinging yourself (the same laptop) - this tells you nothing. Try pinging 192.168.1.1 (this is the likely address of your wireless router) to get some useful feedback. But you really want to have some kind of application/window that gives you an actual signal strength. You shouldn't need to be connected to the internet for this to work.
You may need to try reversing the white and black wires - I doubt if it matters, but it might.

I am running a 32-bit Vista. So the advice about the driver for Xp64 vs Vista64 is not relevant to my problem with the 5100 AGN. (I still have the problems)

64bit isn't really relevant, what I noticed was a xp driver was installed from the factory on my system. Now all I DO KNOW automatically updating my driver it kept picking the xp driver...
with that said downloading and installing the vista version I listed fixed THIS laptop.
I have yet to be disconnected.
As you can tell by my rant on page 1 this problem had me pulling my hair out. Instead of just moving on happily surfing and forgetting about everyone else that has this problem, I just posted what worked for me. Maybe there is something wrong with the listing on the intel site that makes it think it's downloading a vista version.

I downloaded the latest software for Wifi 5100 products from Intel's download center Download Software, Drivers and Utilities (Download Software, Drivers and Utilities Filters) and installed it. That installed driver version 12.4.0.21. This seems to have fixed the problem. I have had no connectivity problems for 3 days running.
I should note that trying the update the driver from the Windows Device Manager did not work -- Windows thought I had the latest driver.
(I am running 32-bit Vista)
Also, Intel's "Driver Update Utility" at Intel® Driver Update Utility for Intel® wireless adapters - Check for the latest driver failed to even detect the 5100 AGN.

Here's the fix as explained by Intel:
Turn off Power-Save Polling.
Updating the wireless router if possible might also help.
Intel® WiFi Products - Power Save Polling (PSP) causes connection issues with some access points
However, I still have poor performance compared to what I should have when the signal strength I'm getting from the wireless router is below ~30%. But at least things are otherwise reliable - no more hangups / reboots needed.

Hi I had the problem of signal drop outs/disconnecting but I found this solution on one of the forum, it worked fine for me. Hope that will work for anyone else with same problem.
To access the Intel Adapter's settings;
1. Go to your Control Panel, open up Network and Sharing.
2. Click on Manage Wireless Networks, then on Adapter Properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab first.
Check and adjust the following settings:
802.11n Channel Width - Set to 20mhz or to match your Router's setting.
802.11n Mode - Set to "Enabled" if your Router's Wireless Mode is set to Wireless N only. If not, Set to "Disable".
Ad Hoc Channel 802.11 b/g - 11
AH Power Management - User choice (Mine is Disabled to keep the system from shutting it off))
AH Quality of Service (QoS) - WMM Enabled if using Router Quality of Service settings and WMM is Enabled. Disabled if not, but you should be using it on your Router.
Roaming Aggressiveness - Highest
Throughput Enhancement - Enabled
Transmit Power - Highest
Wireless Mode - Either 3, 4, 5, or 6 if N mode isn't enabled. When 802.11N modes are enabled, it doesn't matter.
The Wireless Mode should match your Router's settings. If your Router is set to Mixed, then select B/G, B/G/N (if an N Router).
If the Router is set to G only, then set the adapter to G.
After that, go to the Power Management tab and check the box that denies your system permission to turn off the adapter. If allowed to, it can turn it off whenever any given process determines it needs to shut it down.
Click Apply, then Okay. Restart your system and do a POR (Power-On Reset) on your Router. Remember to keep it unplugged for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in.
Go to Network and Sharing, then remove any existing profiles. Setup new ones, and connect to the Router. On the Network and Sharing window, click on Status to the right of the Connection label, then verify your network speed and signal strength.

not as bad as u think
the intel 5100 agn card is actually a great card. It shipped with some touchy problems pertaining to connecting to pretty much any router. But if u were not a total idiot and downloaded the newest drivers from the intel site it would fixs any problems, and you would see just how great the card really is.
P.s. downloading the newest driver through the control panel will not fixs the problem you have to go through the actual intel site.

I don't think so. Today I have a customer machine with 5100AGN and it won't work on Ubuntu 9.04, nor will it work reliably on Windows 7 (brand new laptop). The drivers are the latest available on the Intel website, and at the same level as Toshiba's download.
I am running with a Billion 3011N USB NIC now.
The 5100AGN will connect to a Cisco and a D-Link okay, but it won't connect to a Billion. It will also not connect at the McDonald's WiFi here in Australia.
The solution might have to be to use an external USB NIC or get the supplier to replace the unit completely. The 5100AGN is not accesible without taking the machine apart; ie not just a cover plate... so I cannot and will not try a different internal card in this one. I _may_ try Ubuntu 9.10 shortly though.
With the issues being present on both Linux and Windows, I tend to believe the card is at fault and drivers are only ever going to be a "work around".

For my Acer laptop. Connectivity issues was related to the manufacturer not installing it correctly. Someone replied and said he had to open the back of the laptop and switch the main aux and another wire around. They where inversely connected. After that wifi worked perfectly.(if you want the link let me know). Right now I currently have a HP laptop with the same wifi card and it works perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10.

F2
Ive been having the same problems with this card (5100 AGN) it couldn't find networks on my dell windows xp home. I ran the windows Network Diagnostics by right clicking the small network icon heres what it said "-> Turn on wireless capability
This can be done by using a switch, which is usually found on front or side of the computer, or a function key combination."
Then i remembered that wifi icon on one of the F keys so i pushed the F2 key and that seems to haved solve all my problems.
I think that the network icon represents any connection (wired/dial-up/wifi) where as previous I was used to the idea that wired would create its own network icon.
I also use pdanet over bluetooth for internet through my Droid which changes the phone internet into the laptop internet without the cell phone company extra charges.

AGN 5100 loses signal issue FIXED
Well I can't believe it took me 9 months to figure this out ..... The 5100 AGN signal loss is a Power Management issue. To fix the problem go to Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Power Options / Change Advanced Power Settings / Wireless Adapter Settings / Power Saving Mode and then set both the On Battery and Plugged In options to Maximum Performance .... That will solve the problem of the wireless adapter dropping the signal and you having to reboot to connect to a wireless network .... Finally!

interesting info.
My brother just bought an acer timeline with the 5100 agn adapter. I own a gateway (gateway is now owned by acer) based on the same motherboard but with the only pertinant difference being I have the intel wifi 1000 adapter. His constantly has issues at numerous spots (Boarders and McDonalds but not Starbucks or Panera Bread). It was noticeable because we were sitting at the same table. I tried turning off his power management for wifi but it didnt fix the problem. I updated to the 3.1.1.1 driver from intel. I set to max roaming aggressiveness and max transmission power. The only thing I havent tried is turning off wireless n all-together. To me this proves the 5100agn is the problem. Our systems are almost identical otherwise (except he has 4gb ram and i have 2). Will try turning off n and see if it works otherwise we will be forced to sell his laptop and go with one without a flawed adapter... Any suggestions would be helpful.
