Here is where I am at so far:

CPU - e8400 WolfDale

Motherboard - GIGABYTE UD3R

Video Card - researching

I was going to shop for desktop components one at a time and although the video card is still my main priority, I am reading these NewEgg emails and there are promotional discounts that expire on the 18th, and some on the 21st. Based on what I have bought so far (CPU and motherboard) and what I am trying to accomplish, please let me know what you think of these discounts and if you recommend any product.

Please don't get the idea that I am not researching or that I am being lazy - I am simply doing this because the promotions will expire before I get to researching the products. I realize this is a lot to ask all at once but if you could even just give feedback on one of the components I'll appreciate it. Also, feel free to suggest something that is not a promotion, I am not simply going to buy it because there is a discount, I still want to get the biggest bang for my buck.

I cannot link to the deal page because it's in my e-mail.

All the prices below are after promocode and rebate:

Basically each monitor is 10$ off with the promo code. I haven't researched monitors heavily yet but I just wanted to know if these were good deals since they will expire soon.

RAM

- for memory I need the 4GB RAM correct? Most of the promotions are only for 2GB RAM so I will not bother posting them.

Cases

Newegg.com - Don’t Let the Holidays Pass You By

There's a lot of cases there. The one on top looks cool.. I like the blue lights - but is it good for airflow?

Also, there are some case combo deals with CPUs here:

Newegg.com - Bundle UP this Holiday Season

The first two on that link are the ones that apply to me since I am buying the e8400 CPU.

Thanks a lot.

best choice for vid card is the 9800GT, the only one in that list that will come close is the older 320MB 8800GTS. the rest are half as powerful or less.

for your Build a 500-550W PSU will be more than enough.

but for the 20% off, this one would be good: Newegg.com - OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

20% off deal, plus still take advantage of the Mail In rebate for even less... $56 after 20% Off Promo, & Mail In Rebate... 600W plenty for your system with room to spare, modular PSU, so you don't have to use any extra cables you don't need (means better cable management & room in the case).

as to the hard drives, its because you got a mix mash of drives, one Laptop drive, one external USB drive, and 2 normal desktop drives... laptop drive is much smaller, your going to pay more for less space, the USB external is going to carry a premium just because its an external drive, despite the drive in the case being nothing more than a typical desktop or Laptop drive, depending on the size of the drive (looks like its a 2.5 inch drive, so thats a laptop drive in there)

as to how much space your looking for, its up to you, but what you'll want to look for is an Internal, 3.5", SATAII, 7200RPM Drive, with at least 16MB of Cache memory. use those parameters in your search criteria & you'll be in the right area to be looking...

here you go... to get you started looking in the right direction: Newegg.com - 3.5", 16MB, 7200 RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, Internal Hard Drives, Hard Drives, Computer Hardware

DVD Burners, a DVD Burner will have you covered for...

DVD-ROM
DVD-R & DVD+R (DVD Recording, Record once)
DVD-RW & DVD+RW (DVD ReWritable, Record/ReWrite Multiple Times)
DVD-RAM (Another ReWritable Format, but Slower & intended mainly for System Back-ups or Archiving Data)
DVD+R DL (Also Known As Dual Layer, basically DVD Recording but at nearly Twice the Storage, 8.5GB vs normal 4.7GB)

With All of these you have to make sure the proper media is used for the corresponding Functions.

But the DVD Burners also support all versions of CD Media

CD-R
CD-RW
CD-ROM

so all you do is buy one Burner & its got you completely covered for all DVD & CD Formats.

Most Blu-Ray Burners are the same as well, except they cover Blu-Ray recording & rewrite as well... but considerably more expensive drives & media (25GB and/or 50GB capacities).

I usually look for DVD burners with the fastest DVD Record & DVD Dual Layer speeds.

Lightscribe is something not very useful to me, mainly because its so damned long to burn an image on the disk, takes longer in general to do that than to actually write the data to the disc.

but some people think its cool & comes in handy...

the Lite-on drive supports Lightscribe, the Sony one doesn't. also should note that in order to use lightscribe you have to use special Lightscribe burnable discs...

on to the cases... the links keep timing out for me, won't load, so can't comment on those yet.

It just so happens that I was helping a friend pick out parts for a Budget PC as well, his Budget being between 600-700. I chose to go with an Intel over AMD because if he downgrades to a Dual Core, hey will may one day want a Quad Core and this will future proof it. But hopefully he'll stick with the Q6600.

This is what I've got, let me know if that Case may not fit. I tend to overlook the simplest things.

Future proof is a useless term in computing. The socket you use for the Q6600 and the other Core 2's (socket 775) has already been replaced and Intel won't be making any new processors for it.

Yes, I know what you mean by that but what I meant was only in terms of future proofing for him. He seemed caught in between using a regular Dual Core to save money, so might get something like Pentium 2200 Allendale. Then he may in the future decide to get the Q6600 if it goes down in price, so it's future proofed in terms of his computer and the socket 775 will still work out for him and will give him room to be flexible. Though I believe that in terms of gaming the Q6600 will be worth the extra money for him.

However I know exactly what you mean that technology runs faster than both what we and our wallets can keep up with.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Here is where I am at so far:

CPU - e8400 (combo discount with case)

MOBO - UD3R

Video Card - 9800GT

PSU - OCZ StealthStream 600W

Case - Antec 900 (combo discount with case)

All of this totals up to 480$ after rebates.

I'm likely going to do the BillMeLater feature so I pay in 3 months... assuming there's no hidden fees. Do you guys happen to know how the rebate process works if I pay 3 months later?

ShyGuy - why do you recommend the OCZ ModStream over the Stealthstream when they are both the same wattage? The stealthstream is 21$ cheaper after all rebates and promotion discounts.

I am now starting to look into RAM. I understand the two that I posted are good deals, but the one that is 5$ more is 1066 as opposed to 800 (1066 and 800 of what, I have no idea). I will just go with the one that is 5$ more incase I have to overclock. Is that fine or is there a better deal on RAM out there? Also, one guy said that if I get the second one that I will have to manually set the timings in BIOS since 1066 isn't normal timing settings and it may be hard for me - should I be worried about this?

Here is where I am right now:

CPU - e8400

MOBO - UD3R

Video Card - 9800GT

PSU - OCZ StealthStream 600W

RAM - GSKILL 4GB 1066

CASE - Antec 900 (comboed with the CPU)

This totals to 520$ after rebate.

What is left? I think just the monitor, hard drive, keyboard and DVD drive. I have a mouse and I get the OS for free from a student organization at school (I am getting Vista 64-bit).

The biggest thing left is the monitor and I think it is very important since that is what I'm going to be staring at. I am thinking about going with this one since it's a big 22" screen : Customer Reviews Of Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 2500:1 - Retail

However, there is one thing that bothers me. One guy is saying that basically I should pay 50$ more and get the 4850 video card or the geforce 260 because the 9800 GT is not sufficient for a 22" monitor - it may not handle the detailed resolutions on high for some games - is this a valid statement? Should I be concerned about this? I was looking forward to the 22" screen but if the 9800 GT cannot handle it then I guess I will settle for the 20".

Thanks.
