New Build Help

I am also building my FIRST computer and would appreciate answer to the following questions:

1. What type of case would you recommend from newegg (based upon your build list).

2. This is really a dumb question: how can I wirelessly browse the internet. I do have Linksys wireless router. Do I have to buy any hardware?

3. Another stupid question: Is this motherboard sufficient so that it can be upgraded for the next 3-4 years (upgrading RAM, video card, more hard disk space)

4. Do the drivers come with hardware or vista contains all the drivers?

5. Is it true that any 19 inch - 22 inch LCD monitor is compatible?

6. can you recommend a sound card?

7. Other than mouse keyboard, am I missing anything?

one more thing: what does MOBO mean?

Thanks, again ...appreciate any help!

I'm just gonna make a build list. It's a lot easier for me, and I can promise you everything will work, and it'll be a great PC. For your $700 budget, I'd go with:

CPU:
E8400 is a good choice. If you wanna move up to a Quad, I would recommend the Q6600.

Motherboard:
You have a lot listed. Personally, I think your best choice is:
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

RAM:
4gigs is pretty much the standard now.
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

PSU:
Newegg.com - Antec Basiq BP500U 500W ATX12V Version 2.01 Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

DVD:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

GPU:
I know you said you have the 8600gts, but I'm gonna save you some time and dissapointment.
Newegg.com - MSI N9800GT 512OC GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
Get that card. It's worlds better then the 8600gts.

OS:
Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit English for System Builders 1pk DSP OEI DVD - Operating Systems
Vista is come to be a pretty decent OS. If your gaming, you want vista.

That would be a great budget build.

You're checking Mechbgon's guide, right?

The Rosewill R5605 is excellent if on a budget. Solid and plenty of room for a long vid card. Has some hidey holes for cable management. Check out the Rosewill Conqueror too for a ricier box - it's identical to the Silverstone PS01. It has been on sale almost since it showed up - very like the SST KL01/02 inside.

2. This is really a dumb question: how can I wirelessly browse the internet. I do have Linksys wireless router. Do I have to buy any hardware?

You will need a wireless networking card to use a wireless router from a desktop machine as most don't come with them. Most laptop/notebook PCs come with them pre-installed or integrated. Get one that matches the protocol of your router and perhaps the same brand as your router if it's performance is nearly equal to any of the others. Time to check the reviews around the web.

3. Another stupid question: Is this motherboard sufficient so that it can be upgraded for the next 3-4 years (upgrading RAM, video card, more hard disk space)

Even I can't stand to keep a mobo that long...

4. Do the drivers come with hardware or vista contains all the drivers?

Vista contains a lot of basic drivers, but you will want the latest proprietary drivers to take advantage of the extra features of new peripherals. Always check the various component's mfr's web sites for the latest versions. No sense having to install them twice. The mobo is likely to have updated drivers and/or BIOS available too - nothing ever seems to ship with the latest drivers.

5. Is it true that any 19 inch - 22 inch LCD monitor is compatible?

Depends on what your video card supports. Many monitors support the old VGA connection as well as a digital connection. So just make sure the monitor you decide on supports the connection type your vid card has. Some monitors have strange res specs these days for wide screen monitors. Most vid cards should support these different specs. The old standards were basically the same ratio as
640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, (basically the 3,4,5 dimensions considered the "magic" rectangle supposed to be unusually pleasing to the eye) etc. Many current monitors can't support 3,4,5 except by just using a part of the screen area.

6. can you recommend a sound card?

I'd wait to see if the integrated sound is adequate. That's getting better all the time. I doubt that many go with separate sound cards these days except perhaps for really serious gamers or audio production types.

7. Other than mouse keyboard, am I missing anything?

one more thing: what does MOBO mean?

mobo is shorthand for motherboard (you know, like mofo is short for _______ ___ . ;-)

Thanks, again ...appreciate any help!

Hmm.. that's doable. I assume this is mainly a gaming machine?

My suggestions:

Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
$120

Newegg.com - ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
$96 ($81 after MIR)

Newegg.com - OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
$47 ($18..yes $18 for 4gigs of RAM after MIR)

Newegg.com - OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies
$75 ($40 after MIR)

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
$159 ($145 after MIR)

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200AAJS 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
$50

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit English for System Builders 1pk DSP OEI DVD - Operating Systems
$100

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Centurion 590 RC-590-KKN1-GP Black SECC / ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases
$60 (free shipping)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Total: $708 without rebates
With MIR factored in: $574 (kind of impressed with that myself) lol

Leave you enough for one of these:
Newegg.com - Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 2500:1 - LCD Monitors
$169. That is 22" of pure WIN! These are great monitors.

What do ya think?

EDIT:
Nice post Zepper!

Wow this is awesome! Thanks Zepper and KarmaKiller :-)

Can you suggest me a quad core processor (CPU) or is the above mentioned processor powerful for the next 2 years and can be upgraded later?

I searched the Rosewill Conqueror at newegg. It comes with 500w power supply. Could you paste the correct links? thanks.

Newegg.com - Rosewill Conqueror WBK Triple 120mm Fans Steel ATX Mid tower Computer Case with Side Panel - Computer Cases

Newegg.com - Rosewill Conqueror RPS-01-WB500P Triple 120mm Fans Steel ATX Mid tower Computer Case with 500W Power Supply - Computer Cases

which one?

Also, can you suggest a much larger hard drive. > 600 gb hard drive

Cheapest Quad on egg:
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
Same one I run. They solid CPUs.
Newegg.com - Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
That would be the next Quad (as far as price goes) that I would get.

And on the upgraded later. In theory, any CPU you pick up can most likely be upgraded. BUT, is it always worth the price is a whole other question. Intel already has the newer socket out (1366) and are already in the phase of switching over to that socket. Now I'm not saying this PC is gonna be slow or anything. But the chances of the upgrade 2 years from now actually being worth it are pretty slim.

As far as the HDD, this is my normal suggestion:
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
I just picked one of these up myself, and they are fast. If you want more then that, then I would suggest:
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
But they aren't as fast as the 640gb drives.

THANK YOU x3!

One last request: I am still confused when it comes to case:

Newegg.com - Rosewill Conqueror

which one?

Also, do I have to wear some kind of "static grounded wire thingy"

Anything, else I am missing before going for the purchase?

Out of those, I would go with the Rosewill Conqueror RPS-01-WB500P Triple 120mm Fans Steel ATX Mid tower Computer Case with 500W Power Supply - Retail. At $10 more than the other two (also free shipping), the additional power supply should be worth it.
