| Howdo I determine if usb port is 2.0?
Hi
I was copying data to an external hard drive and a message popped up saying that the process would go faster if I used a USB 2.0 port. I assumed the ports on the laptop were 2.0 cause it's only 2 years old. How do I determine which usb ports are 2.0? If I look in Devoce Manger it doest tell me the version of the ports.
Thanks
Arjay13

Usually if you search the model of the laptop online, you can find out if it has v2 usb |

When you plug in a USB2.0 device and it says you can improve performance if you use a USB2.0 port ... thats normally a good way to tell no?
Just because its newer doesnt mean that all ports are created equally. I know with desktops for instance, the rear USB are 2.0 and sometimes the front panel are only 1.0/1.1. |

I checked the manual and discovered on the spec sheet that all the ports are usb 2.0 - which begs the question as to why the message pops up about switching to a usb 2.0 port in the first place. Does XP generate the message? Is it possible that the drivers for the usb ports are incorrect and xp sees them as 1.0? Or ? |

could it be a bios setting not fully enabling 2.0 speeds?

Go to control panel, system, device control and check to see if you have USB 2 drivers installed. If not, they should be on the CD that came with the computer or you can get them from the net. |

Look in Device Manager for "Enhanced" USB controller. That is USB 2.0.
That said, a cheap cable used to connect a USB device may result in that warning. I've seen Windows suddenly just go wacky and stop connecting USB 2.0 devices properly. In my experience, that particular problem required a full reinstallation of Windows to correct.
