Best Buy has a vested interst in fixing it for you and not charging you for it, a seperate shop does not. A qualified shop, like Geek Squad, should not void the warrenty. The seal thing is generally to keep Joe Schmoe from working on it, messing it up, and then turning it in for warrenty work.

However, I have a hard time believing that they won't charge me for a repair even when the warranty isn't through best buy. I wonder how much they would charge for something as simple as this. I guess I'll have to head down there. |

As far as the seal goes, have they placed a sticker over one of the screws? I have come accross this on numerous comps before. You can't open the case without loosening that screw, but you can't loosen the screw without putting a hole in the sticker or removing the sticker (it won't stick back on... trust me). If not, then they may have something inside that once you open it, it shows so, or that you would have to remove to get any real access to the parts.

And just to clarify, if I take it to geek squad to have them look at the fan, my sony warranty won't be void? Thanks!! |

Geek Squad - located inside Best Buy to avoid getting past this->today is my last day for a return/exchange at best buy...
You'll find out about the warranty as soon as you call them. |

I stopped by best buy and talked to the geek squad. You guys were right -they honor the manufacturer's warranty apparently (in this case 1 year).
I explained the problem to them and they said they can certainly take a look at no cost. So, I'll bring mine in sometime soon and have them look at it. If they can't fix it in the store, they'll send it out to Sony. I didn't drop mine off tonight because they said they were backed up so I'll drop it off at a later date.
Really seems like a hanging wire, so hopefully not every single replacement fan has this problem. Thanks! |

Unlike a mom and pop shop, we have agreements for making authorized repairs and doing checks prior to shipping out for repair at their or our facilities. Rest assured that you are in good hands with Geek Squad.
Something that doesnt make sense to me is how you purchased it at best buy but have a Sony warranty. Why wouldnt/didnt you get the warranty offered through best buy? As an FYI to you and anyone else reading this thread, if you have three on record hardware (not software, ie OS) repairs made to a laptop that are not considered user abuse, you qualify for a No Lemon Return. What this basicly means is that on your fourth return for service, you can have the full value of the laptop given as credit towards a new laptop. This was the policy when i left over two years ago no but i dont remember reading that it has changed. You may want to check with your local Geek Squad Agents in-store to verify that this is still valid.
Cheers! |

I didn't purchase the warranty because it was almost half the price I paid for the laptop, so it wasn't worth it. Even after the warranty is up, I've taken apart and fixed laptops before. The warranty is Sony's manufacturer warranty, nothing special.
My question to you is, what is the realistic turn-around time for a repair - done in-shop or sent out? Thanks. |
