| How much could you build this for?
This is the Gateway 300X model and I was wondering if it was a good price? I just copied the specs from the print preview page. I did make a few changes.
It's for someone at my work.

The best I could come up with is through NewEgg.com. $985 before shipping. Of course you only get warranties through the manufacturers (unless it arrives broken), and you have to build it yourself. I put together as comprable system as I could. I picked the cheapest available (in terms of shipping + price) when I didn't know what manufacturer Gateway was using.

Dollar says an AthlonXP 1600+ beats the pants off a 1700mhz Celeron, CDROM is 32X not 24X, video card is GeForce 3 ti200 (possibly) not built in Intel (ew), RAM is crucial, not generic, but hdd is 20 instead of 40gb (change if you want more).

Well now we're looking at the Dell Dimension 4400 but that comes with XP and we want Windows 2000.
Some of our software will probably not run on Windows XP and Theres been some bad things said about it and we dont want to risk all the glithces so we'd rather go wtih Windows 2000.
But I called Dell and they said that the Dimension are now all Shipping with XP and that we can't get Windows 2000 on them anymore.
So i have to keep on looking |

So i have to keep on looking | I doubt that you will have any problems running apps that do well on W2K, when using WinXP as your OS. At home, I have 2 pcs running XPPro. One was previously W2KPro, the other was Win98se (now dual boot Win98se/XPPro). With he exception of certain hardware (Intel Me2Cam on my 9-year old's pc) and a few kid's games, everything I have, business and gaming runs just fine in XPPro. At work, I use W2KPro, W2K Server, Win95B for a whole collection of apps. I am part of a test eval team to check all our business software prior to U/Ging all user workstations. Been at it several months. So far, I have only run across a couple rather obscure cases (certauin versions of DB programs, certain versions of Novell/Lotus Notes combinations) where something worked in W95B but did not run in XPPro (but then again, they wouldn't run in W2KPro either).
My experience has been if it runs in W2KPro it will run fine in WinXPPro.
Regards,
jmichna

We have hundreds of client pcs still running W95B and W98... that's where our real concerns are... it's not those folks who are on W2K migrating to WinXP.
