no. I'm using Windows XP Professional.
If I click on Sharing, there's no Advanced tab.
Here is what I have on the Sharing tab:
Local Sharing and Security:
To share this folder with other users of this computer
only, drag it to the Shared Documents folder.
To make this folder and its subfolders private so that
only you have access, select the following check box:
(it then shows a checkbox that says after it: "Make this folder private", however,
the checkbox and the text are 'greyed out', so i can't check this option on or off at all,
which is kind've weird)
Then under that section, it says:
Network sharing and security:
As a security measure, Windows has disabled remote access to this computer.
However, you can enable remote access and safely share files by running the
Network setup Wizard. (this is hyperlinked in blue)
If you understand the security risks but want to share files without running the wizard,
click here. (this whole line is also hyperlinked in blue)
Learn more about sharing and security. (sharing and security also hyperlinked)
...And that's it. That's all this panel shows. What should I do?

"Click on the Security tab and click on Advanced. "
No Security tab is very bad news. Do you see a Security tab on any other folders on that drive?

No I don't. But, FYI, this drive is an external drive (that the folders are in) that I purchased (so it might not be like obviously what the Windows folders come with) It's a great drive though, it's treated me good up til now..heh.. |

Lets start over - if you double click on one of the jpeg file - what happens?
Or if you right click and select Open With - and select IE or one of the other programs that open jpegs - what happens? |

...And that's it. That's all this panel shows. What should I do? | Ok, from that it sounds like you're using "Simple File Sharing". This is a crappy version, and (from memory) doesn't enable the 'full' version of permissions - just allow others to change or not.
Open a folder, click Tools --> Folder Options. Click the "View" tab, scroll down to the very bottom of the list. The last tickbox will ask whether or not to "Use simple file sharing", make sure that this is not ticked. Click "OK" and re-open the Properties box as I described earlier.
Now do you have the "Security" tab. If you don't have it now we can explain how to use the convert command to change the drive format from FAT(32) to NTFS. NTFS is the preferred format for disks now, as it allows you to control permissions for different user/s - each of which can have different settings. NTFS Security Benefits
Anyway, let us know how you get on....

Steve R Jones: If I double click the messed up file, it just shows the jpeg viewer but it's messed up because it just says 'No preview available'
Nude Lewd Man: Ok, I've made the change on the 'use simple file sharing' and unticked it. However, it didn't add a Security tab from doing that so I guess I'll need your help/instructions on how to change my external drive from FAT32 to NTSF.... |

| So, presuming that your OS (Operating System - XP) is on the C: drive, you would type:
CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS
at the prompt.
Before you start this, you might want to ensure that there is a copy of the file/s on the drive/partition you are running the convert on. While I have done a convert many dozens of times, and without any problems, there is always that one time......
Of course, and as I've said LOTS of times before, if any data isn't backed up it means that it can't be important... Especially when you consider all the various backup options available (including the NTBackup that is included in XP Pro..!) |

Ok, if I do this conversion, is that all I'll have to do? In other words, right when I do the conversion, do you think it will fix the messed up jpeg image? Or are there other steps after you do the conversion? |
