| files doing stupid strange things
Hi,
There is a weird phenomenon that happens to my image files sometimes when I relocate them to new folders or sometimes I think it just happens out of the blue. The files will lose their functionality, and I can't delete them by right clicking on them or dragging them to the trash. I also can't open them and they lose their picture preview icon. It's like, they're just 'ghosts' of themselves almost and they can't be moved, deleted, renamed, or changed in any way.
First of all, why does this happen? It's really annoying and doesn't make any sense. I can see maybe Windows doesn't want a pathname to change perhaps, but it should all me to still manipulate the name, delete, etc. Because what I have to end up doing is going to get a another file just like it and pop it in there with a new name, but still have that little bugger sitting there with no purpose other than to not allow the new file to have the same exact name and to just sit there annoying me.
Can someone help me to figure out how to get rid of these kinda files? Is there a way to 'force delete' them?

What type of files are they? jpegs? gif? etc.....
Files generally don't lose their functionality...But unistalling the viewer or application will make it like they are borken.

I guess I don't have a grasp of the problem yet.
Are you getting an error message when you try to manipulate the file? If so what is that message. |

ok, this is weird to explain because it doesn't give an error message..the file just plainly stops working.
For example, when you normally right click on your jpegs inside folders, you'll see a menu open up that gives you the following:
Preview
Edit
Print
Preview
Refresh Thumbnail
-----------------------
Rotate Clockwise
Rotate Counterclockwise
-----------------------------
Set as Desktop Bkgrd
Scan
Open with >
------------------------------
Smart FTP
Add to Archive
Compress & Email
Winzip
Upload using
Email with Yahoo
-------------------------------
Send To >
-------------------------------
Cut
Copy
---------------------------
Create Shortcut
Delete
Rename
---------------------------
Properties
Now, when the error happens and the jpeg gets all strange and everything, instead of getting the above menu, I can only get 'some' of the menu if I right click on it, which are as follows:
Preview
Edit
Print
Preview
-----------------------
Rotate Clockwise
Rotate Counterclockwise
-----------------------------
Set as Desktop Bkgrd
Open with >
------------------------------
Send To >
You'll notice that it gets rid of any way to edit it...like DELETING it...which is so weird. Also, it won't let you move it, so I can't drag it to the recycle bin. I'll remind you again, this doesn't give me an error message and this doesn't happen that often, but every once and awhile Windows will just decide to kill an image file of mine in one of my folders rendering it unusable, yet still visible (you can see the jpeg icon, just no preview of the image like before)
Not sure how to give you any other info..this is all i can provide... |

Who owns the files? Is it your userid? It could be that you don't own the folder.

I'm pretty sure I own them because I remember setting myself as the 'Administrator' of my computer and not giving anyone else permissions on anything, only me.
However, I'm not experienced at all in folders, so is there a way you can tell if I 'own' it as you put it? Where do I make sure that I own the folders? |

This will open a window. Click on the "Security" tab --> click "Advanced".
This wll open a new window. Click the "Owner" tab. Here it will tell you who 'own's the item/s you selected.

Guessing that you're using Vista - so click on Sharing. |
