| Is this a decent gaming system???
I'm currently saving up to build my gaming system. I'm fairly new to building, but I have a decent knowledge of parts ect. I'm just after some advice on the parts I'm going to get. CPU: Intel Core i7 920 (2.66Ghz/ 8MB/ 4.8GT QPI/ Quad Core) Mobo: Asus RAMPAGE-II-GENE LGA1366 Memory: Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D 6GB (3x 2GB) PC-12800 (1600MHz) DDR3 RAM Video Card: Asus ENGTX275-HTDI-896MD3 Geforce GTX275 HD1: Western Digital WD740HLFS VelociRaptor, 74GB HD2: Samsung HD103UJ 1TB HDD 7200rpm HD3: Samsung HD103UJ 1TB HDD 7200rpm HD4: Old computers 200GB sata HD Optical Drive 1: Lite-On IHES206(BLACK) BLU RAY COMBO Optical Drive 2: LG GH22-NS30 22 x Dual Layer Black OEM - SATA Case: Cooler Master SGC-6000-KKN1 Storm Sniper Case Power Supply: Antec 750W TruePower ATX Power Supply with Blue LED OS: probs windows XP PRO but will upgrade to 7 when full version arrives
Also... Will all the parts fit alright in the CM SNIPER case?, anybody had problems with any of the parts?
Any help greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks |

looks like a solid build, case might be a bit of a tight fit in the end (handling things, etc), but it should all fit in there just fine. I'm just more accustomed to larger cases like My Thermaltake Armor case, or the Coolermaster Stackers.
yeah for the time being, unless your running XP Pro 64-bit, you won't be able to use all of your systems RAM, you'll be stuck with about 3GB max to use till you upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit (if you do)
32-bit can only address up to 4GB (4096MB), subtracting the GPU's memory, HDD cache, and CPU Cache, just to get a rough estimate would give you your available RAM for windows, but even still 3GB is plenty for now.
my i7 build will only be running 3GB right now too, till I upgrade to another 3-6GB more.
with my setup though, I'm hurting more than your would be, running XP 32-bit right now as main OS, and Win7 RC 64-bit for secondary. figuring 32-bits 4GB max, it'll leave me with less than 2GB for the system, I'm running 2x Radeon 4870's 1GB each, and 4 drives as well, 1x 32MB Cache, and 3x 16MB cache drives, and the same CPU as you (i7 920), not factoring in optical drive cache memory, etc.
luckily I'll be also using Win7 RC 64-bit for the time being, which will help me out considerably with the dual cards, and some of my 3D apps to use all the system RAM.

Ok great, thanks for the help . I forgot about how 32bit only supports up to 4gb, so ill make sure I look out for 64bit XP or 7 instead. |

Firstly, thats far from a decent gaming system... Its a top end ripping fast one really.. It will handle any game you throw at it unless you have a ginormous 30 inch monitor
I suggest you save your money and download the Windows 7 beta, and install that. If you happen to have an extra copy of XP or Vista lying around you could try dual booting with Win 7. When Win 7 comes out next year simply buy the retail and replace your beta.
As for the beta being too buggy for your main OS, its not. Its actually very stable from my and many other people's experience and has some decent support going on for it. Plus its free for now.

I just wanna ask, why are you getting the ROG motherboard? Do you have plans to OC heavily? If so, you can do the same clocks on the bloodrage, and save some money. Also I'd recommend getting a i7 920 D0 stepping, as they overclock further on less volts.
If your not planning to OC, then I'd go for a gigabyte x58 board. They still get decent clocks, but gigabyte boards are VERY stable and durable IMO.
Also might check into aftermarket cooler if your planning to OC.
Next I want to add that the 74Gb raptor isn't all the fast compared to modern drives. A western digital or seagate 640BGb drives perform as good, if not better, not to mention they offer LOTS more storage room.
And my last suggestion, I'd probably go for a XFX or EVGA card. They offer better warranties should anything go wrong. Not to mention they will probably come with a free game.
Welcome to TechIMO btw. |

Yeah I would go on Karma's point. The 74gb really isn't worth it, not to mention, 74gb will fill fast (I have a raptor 150gb, and I have to install some apps on a separate drive to leave room for games on it).
And with the motherboard, haven't had any i7 experience yet, but I have gotten some great life out of my gigabyte board.
And the operating system. Don't pay for xp, that would be silly. The windows 7 release candidate is solid, and runs on less resources than vista, and the license is good until next spring (the retail is slated for october release last I heard).

Yeah. You want something like this:
HDD1: 300GB WDC VelociRaptor
HDD2: 1tb WDC Black
HDD3: 1tb WDC Black |
