how do i connect a samsung lcd tv to my laptop

I have a 32" lcd (samsung ln32a330j1nxza). i recently purchased a Hdmi to Vga cable which has a HDMI cable on one side and a VGA with an audio / video cable on the other side , but i am not able to connect the 2.
The LCd specs are :
- Hdmi slot (2)
- 15 pin Vga port (pc in cable)

My laptop specs r:
- s video port,
- 15pin vga port
- extra expansion port

can anyone guide me through

Wabz,
On the TV
Plug the HDMI Cable into your TV and Select the proper HDMI channel.
On the Laptop
Plug the VGA cable and Audio Cable into you Laptop.
(assuming you're running Windows) right+click your desktop.
Select Properties
Select the Settings Tab
Select the blue square with a 2 on it.
select the box that says (Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor.

This should work if your laptop is powerful enough to output your video to the tv.

I tried these , went to the settings tab but the laptop does not recognise the 2nd monitor.

I will get a male to male vga cable and hook up the LCD as an external monitor since the laptop and Lcd screen have both vga .
