Well here's what I would do.
I'd personally wait for the I5 to be dropped. They are going to be cheaper then the i7's, and you'll get nearly the same performance out of them. They are supposed to be released this summer, so anyday now they'll be out.
Both the CPU and motherboard are priced under $200, so it'll be cheaper then the i7's also.
This is what I'm waiting for before I do my next upgrade.

If you don't wanna wait any longer, I'd suggest a AMD Quad system them. They have great bang for buck value, and you can get those now.

I can whip up a AMD list for ya, so that's no big deal. But if you have time, google "i5" and read through some of the early benchmarks.

This should get you started. About $900 (minus your old system = $500+). What I suggest is to take out the 300gig raptor and the 640gb HD. Leave the rest of your system as it is and sell it. You get much more money selling a complete system (which it will be still if you just take out those two). Stick the two drives into the system below and your new rig will whoop your old one's ass. You should probably get about $300-350 for the old one (without the two drives).

If that is too much money, you could drop your CPU down to this to save you $100+
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor - Processors - Desktops

Its still a good CPU that will rip through games.

edit: or as Karma said, you could also wait to see what happens with i5. But that will be a few more months. It might be worth it though.

BTW just so you know there is supposed to be a Phenom II 965 coming out soon (within a couple of days to a week or two). It might cause the prices of the current chips to drop.

....I was thinking of waiting for the I5 but I'm not sure if they are going to be that much less $ and also how well they will overclock....plus being a new socket will a good OC board realy not be pricey??? The few reviews I saw stack up pretty close to the AMD Phenom II X4 955 stock and I'm pretty sure I can get that puppy up to 4ghz or more.
...either way I'll wait a couple weeks....maybe.....lol

From everything that's been released so far, they are supposed to start at under $200. And the boards are supposed to be about the same. Of course they will have a pricey full of features board that will cost more, but they will also have decent priced boards with some options.
And from the few leaked benchmarks, interviews, blogs and such people are saying 5Ghz "with very little effort" on air, and mid 5ghz's for more extreme cooling. So they are gonna OC like a beast.
