| can I upgrade for this $ ?
Well....can I upgrade or should I wait untill I have a grand or more??
specs:
antec 480w PS
WD raptor 300g
WD SATA2 320g
WD SATA2 640g
Nvida 8800 GT OC
DVD burner, LCD Monitor.
keyboard, mouse, 5.1 speakers
ect....
looking to replace:
cpu & cooler, ram, mobo..
...maybe case and power supply...
the i7 920 & AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz
are only about $34 apart and I'd like 4+gb ram but I guess
I could live with 3gb for a while if I went with the i7 until
I could add more and I would get a much better video card
in the future also...
...I usualy O/C a bit (2.4ghz @ 2.92 right now) so it's GOT
to O/C well, I've had good luck with ASUS boards and tend to favor
them but willing to listen to suggestions...
...wife gave me a budget of $500...might be able to squeek a bit more
our of her...($700 absolute max - $600 much easier on nuts...lol)
Thanks in advance ( I know some of you are GREAT at this!!) |

...a little of everything but not a lot of games...want it to perform well when I do but I'm too old and slow for the newer games...
....I want it to do most anything I want for another few years untill I do another build from scratch... |

Did I miss it or did you not post what your cpu, ram and mobo are now?

....uhhh...not what they should be....
...2.4ghz SD core AMD 4000+@ 2.92ghz (socket 939)
....Asus A8N SLI deluxe mobo
....2gb DDR ...
....built this when dual core was just comming out & thought
I'd just pop in a better CPU later....well...
.....couldn't afford a 939 dual once I could afford one...
....got to say for single core it still runs pretty good though!!!
.....as you can see thogh there's a lot of room for improvement!!!!!!!!!! |

those Quads will be a HUGE move up. I'm coming from a Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz to a Core i7 920 @ 2.66GHz and am seeing a very big performance increase, especially with HyperThreading in some apps.
add in the 3GB in Triple Channel RAM.
and what ever other enhancements they've done.
but I can imagine the jump from Socket 939 Single core to a current Quad, it'll be like being out of the PC scene for 10 years and remembering how fast things WERE, and then seeing things Now LOL. |
