headset mic not working

Im running windows 7 on my gamer rig and apparently everything from vista to current OS do not like the analog mic plugs or w.e it is. So i went and bought a usb head set and mic combo...I have a great sound system to i would like to disable the headset phones but enable the mic so i can chat..Anyone help me out on his, iv tried everything in the book that im aware of. Thanks in advance fellas!

Are you plugged into the front or back? If the front, move the pink plug to the back and try that...

A couple of thoughts with the limited information we have in regard to your setup;

1. Check your volume levels. Make sure that the mic is not muted and that volume is high enough to pick up sound.

2. In your sound options, make sure that the drop down menu for recording has the device that you're using for a microphone. Your settings may be set to a default mic that doesn't exist or a port that has nothing attached to it. You may see a drop down that says for recording device something like, "recording device; YOUR SOUNDCARD HERE". If you are using a USB mic, you may need to drop the menu down and select the device you're using.

3. If you want to disable sound in the USB headset but not the mic, then just adjust the volume level or mute the sound level that outputs volume (might be wav or line out, etc). IF HOWEVER, you're trying to get sound through speakers but talk through the mic and you're using a USB setup, you may need a standalone, dedicated microphone.
