But, I guess I can see where I should probably call it rebuilding my PC.

What you said is indeed pretty much building a new system. If you change more than 60% of the parts like that Its called building a new system and salvaging a few parts from the old one. Thats what its called

anyways, you want the 64 bit version. No. You MUST get it if you plan to have anything over 3 gigs of ram. the 32 bit version recognizes 4 gigs max, including video card ram.

This is still true with the new Windows 7?
I thought I heard they were able to up it.

Maybe I was thinking of 64 bit, I dunno.

I guess I need to get an evaluation copy
of Win 7 64 bit and do some testing to see
if my favorite programs are going to work.

Does Bill offer evaluation copies?

yes it is true for any os. reason is not the way they write the OS, its just the nature of the bits, if you want to put it that way.

a very simplified explanation
32 bit basically means 2^32 = 4294967296 = 4 gigs.
64 bit solves this problem since 2^64 = 14 million something gigs or something like that.

you can get the 90 trial of W7 Enterprise edition from technet Windows 7 Enterprise| Trial, Evaluation, Test, Deploy

or if you know someone with W7 you can use their disk and install it w/o activation for 30days

Same goes if you know someone with the release candidate disk, which is what Pull is talking about. The site for new keys has been removed but any old key should activate it and will allow you to run it until June 1st, 2010

Sounds close to impossible as I don't "know" anyone...

I think the best thing for me to do is wait until the first service pack
comes out and then buy the 64 bit version. If that won't work for
me maybe I can sell it on eBay and get some of my money back
and buy the 32 bit version

Assuming you have a 64-bit processor there. Your Win7 or Vista 64-bit OS will use all of your 4 GB of DDR ram; currently, as you can see, XP is recognizing only 3 GB. But both the processor and RAM are relatively slow by current standards. If you don't have an Athlon 64X2, you might try to pick up a cheap one; that would at least give you the benefits of dual core.

TBH its a bit silly to buy W7 32 bit becasue if you ever want a computer that has 4 gigs of ram and a graphics card then you are out of luck because you are stuck at 4 gigs of ram.

as far as I know there is nothing that does not work on my copy of the W7 64 bit beta. I doubt SP1 is going to make much of a difference. its really polished now. so polished that there are almost 0 major changes from the beta to the retail version, and only a bunch of minor bug fixes according to many tech sites. I doubt they will need a SP1 for a long time, so my guess is that you will wait a long time.
