There are multiple ways for (both of) you to go for, but IMHO, the best solution for maximising your VFM and a (relatively) minimal outlay, I would go for a W2k3 SBS (Windows 2003 Small Business Server) as it will enable you to have a full-on domain in a very short time, enable you to set up VPN, there's also Remote Web Workplace (enabling all users to Remote Desktop into the machines in the network), not to mention Exchange, Active Directory, Group Policies, and quite a bit more too...
Just bear in mind that all 'client' computers would need to be the Professional/Business/Media/Ultimate flavour, as the Home versions won't work properly in a domain environment... The will (most often) be able to connect up to access data/printers, but this would need to be done every time it is logged in, and you wouldn't be able to log in with domain profiles on it...
I don't have a link, and I don't have time to (as I need to get to bed, I've got two interphews tomorrow morning), but I'm sure someone can find something up...
FWIW, I have a W2k3SBS at home, and have most features enabled...

Do you have more a link about windows 7 acting as a vpn server? |

I've used DD-WRT as a VPN server before. It's a bit of a pain to setup, but I did have it working. Used the OpenVPN client to connect to it. No hacking required. VPN (the easy way) v24+ - DD-WRT Wiki
Under Network Connections, enable the menu bar, then go to File->New Incoming Connection |

The problem is those routers resources/processing power are so limited that several clients along with the normal traffic could become an issue. My friends and I run a setup where all our routers are connected to a central server and we are very limited by the routers/firmware to take full advantage of the VPN and our bandwidth |
