cd-rw and dvd drives: generic brand vs. brand name

Buy generic, use it for 2 years throw it away. Technology's outdated anyway. Just think if you'd bought a Plextor 4X writer for $375 in 1998? Where'd you be today?

Like Whir says they're all same. Even hard drives- just a bunch of companies globally that have the know how to manufacture them.

Sometimes I think it'd be nice to lease this kinda stuff like cars-get new one every so often.

Germ, are you going to be using that Lite-on DVD with Linux? I've been putting of getting a DVD-ROM since my old CD-ROM is still hanging in there. It's got a little life left but not much.

Will you let me/us know if you have any trouble with it if you use it in *nix?
