XP also has Safe mode with command prompt - it boots into a VGA UI to enter the Administrator pw, then starts a cmd.exe shell. |

Ctrl works in some versions; F8 is more universal though. |

3.1 isn't an operating system (it's a shell and window manager for DOS) so it can't be bypassed. You're thinking of using F8 to bypass Config.sys and autoexec.bat in Dos 6. |

so lots of opinions out there but now i'm wondering how to in windows 98 (not xp) bypass windows starting when we turn on the computer

I'm a Win98SE guy, I always use control key to get to safe mode or dos prompt or step by step...
You have to be quick, or you will miss the chance to select. Too soon and the bios complains. You got to be holding down the key before windows starts to load, then you will get a menu.

With W98SE, I use the CTRL key as well. It is the same function as pressing F8 except you do not have to press CTRL multiple time to get into the menu, just hold it down. |
