Hi,
When you send someone a pic and they view it on any computer, does it leave a trace of it on the computer? They view it but don't save the file. I still think it's technically there and downloaded on the hard drive. Right? Just would be harder to see/find. Or am I wrong?

No, I wouldn't think so. What web site do you have in mind?
Only pictures embedded in web sites could possibly be viewed.

Yes, it's there at least for a while. If it was viewed in a web browser it will be in the temporary Internet files. Even files that have been deleted are still on the hard drive until that space on the hard drive is overwritten. They may not be easy to find, but they can be recovered by someone with the right knowledge and software tools.

What are they viewing it with? If it's a web-based email account they will open it in their browser and it will be on the hard drive. If they use a standalone email program like Outlook, it will be downloaded to the hard drive, then viewed in the program.
I'm curious why you want to know. I would recommend that you never send naked pictures of yourself to anyone...

OK guys laugh and wink at me all you want.........I did send sexy pics to someone who said I could trust him so I did. He said he was a man of honour and a man of his word....blah, blah, blah. I told him to look on his home computer, not on the work computer. What does he do.....he looks on his work computer and lies that he uses the home one when he either doesn't have one or doesn't have internet connection. Man, treat a guy and this is what he does.
Anyway, I just wanna castrate him but I just wanted to talk to you more about it.
@Howste or anyone.......how long does it take for files to be over written? I know it's hard to say. Will it be a good chance they will be? (Sorry I'm a newb). Do you think it's slim someone will find them? (I don't think he he saved the pics to file, he just viewed them from his Yahoo mail). I doubt someone there will go through the trouble to snoop through the computer to see what's on there. But what are the chances when the company gets rid of the computer? So do you think I can relax a little bit about it or should I be having a heart attack? lol! (But I'm not really laughing.........) Will not do again as I had huge reservations about doing it in the first place but the bugger said I could trust him. Call me stupid but obviously I'm not the only girl who has done this. I'm kinda at the point now what's done is done and I can't worry about it. Him on the other hand, that's a different story...............OK, you can stop laughing. I can hear you from here. :/

If they were viewed with Yahoo mail, then ask him to delete the browsing history. If he used Internet Explorer it's under the Tools menu, then select Internet Options. There should be a window come up that allows the temporary files to be deleted. If another browser was used, such as Firefox or Chrome, there should be a similar feature to delete the temporary files. After they're deleted it's unlikely that anyone would find the pictures unless they knew they were there already. Even then, most people wouldn't even know how to begin to undelete files.
How long until they are overwritten? It depends on a lot of factors. If the hard drive is close to full, then they'll be overwritten pretty quickly. If the hard drive has plenty of space, it could be a long time. Again, probably not a big deal unless someone knows they're there and has the knowledge and software tools to retrieve them.
I think you've learned your lesson. I'm sure (I hope!) you won't do it again. Ever. Here's a link that may help with the "man of honour" you mentioned: Human Male Castration Procedures | eHow.com

I was going to ask him to delete the browsing history. I hope he used IE cause I think Firefox is more complicated and I don't know much about the others. Question is will he do it as he knows nothing about computers and might be scared he might delete something important from work which I know is not the case and if I give him instructions will he be able to do it. I don't even know if he knows what version of IE he's using. But anyways, I can try and figure this out. If he's using a search engine I'm not familiar with I'll post back. IE is easy.
I hope they will eventually be overwritten. I'd like to find out how much space is left on the hard drive but that won't happen. Now I have to see if he will delete the pics from his Yahoo. Great! I'm worried he won't do it. Knew I should have used an online website where I could set the settings to private and they wouldn't be shown to the public but I was scared of people who like to hack private photos cause they're hoping to see some sexy pics.
Thanks for the link on castration lol! I'd love to try the Burdizzo one.
Yes I've learned my lesson!
Never trust again!

After they're deleted, filling up the hard drive with movies would probably do the trick...

Haha! But a movie is a bit more obvious. He won't want to get caught. Sometimes I wish someone caught him looking at my pics. He had a little too much fun looking at them if you know what I mean.
I just figured that out cause he told me he was looking at them at home and he wasn't!

@howste When you say watch a movie can it be from a disc? Just wondering if watching from a disc would over write like downloading a movie. I would think so but not sure. I'm going to delete all the pics off my computer and watch some movies I think...................

Can you explain to me how to get rid of TIF when using FF? I tried it using these directions http://www.bnl.gov/itd/webapps/browsercache.asp When I do that (Tools, Options, Privacy, Clear recent history, check all options, Clear now) I get rid of Memory Cache Device and Offline Cache Device but not Disk Cache Device. I can tell by puting about:cache into the address bar. How do I get rid of the DCD?
Thanks.

When you watch a movie from a DVD or CD it doesn't write it to the hard disk. That wouldn't do anything. You'd need to copy the CD or DVD to the hard drive. It doesn't have to be a movie though. Anything with a lot of data would overwrite the "empty" space on the hard drive.
Actually there are some utilities that you can use to permanently delete data from a hard drive. They will not only delete the file name in the FAT, but will also overwrite the data on the hard drive itself with zeros. For this, it would be best to NOT delete the browser temporary files with the browser options. It would be better to find the files' location on the hard drive, then delete them with the utility.

Hmmm, I end up deleting TIF every once in a while when clearing my history etc. so some may not be there or maybe I'd just have to view it again. Seems easier to just destroy the hard drive later when I want a new computer. Can you take out a harddrive on a laptop like you can a desktop? In the mean time I may delete TIF and the picture files and copy a movie on to the harddrive (not sure how to do that) as my computer was giving me grief the other day so I don't want these pics to be seen by a tech person! What a headache! Knew I'd have to delete them sooner or later. BTW how do you get rid of thumbnails?
So I kept calm and tried talking to the 'man of honour' about the pics and well....he's written me off and won't talk to me. Nice guy eh? Guess I was dealing with a scumbag after all. Oh well, not going to worry about anything out of my control.

Yes you can, but it will be worth less if you do.
Tech people have better things to do than search peoples hard drives for deleted pictures. Unless they already know they're there, why would they even look? The Internet is full of porn they can get much more easily.
With fingernail clippers?
You can see the thumbnails file in the directory if you set your windows explorer options to display hidden files (or is it operating system files?). Just delete them.
Jerks are jerks.
Send the pics to me and I'll treat them right.
Just kidding - please don't send them to me. I don't want them, and my wife would NOT be happy about it anyway.
Make sure to use the CCleaner "Secure Deletion" option if you use it. This will overwrite the data on the hard drive 1 to 7 times depending on the settings you use. You might also try Eraser.

here you can see a comparison of the 7850 vs GTX 570 (GTX 560 Ti 448 is reduced spec 570, so the 448 Core would be close to the 7850 in performance, if not just behind it a hair): AnandTech |...
