| Need a quieter CPU heatsink/fan... suggestions?
I'm looking for a replacement for my current fan/heatsink, which is a ThermalTake Dragon Orb 3 (7000rpm). This model is just too loud and doesn't cool well enough on my current setup (AXP 1800+). Can anyone recommend a lower-rpm fan that will put out greater CFM at less than 37dBA? This Dragon Orb gives out 38CFM. Thanks! |

So it's not cool enough even with that high RPM screamer? I as gonna suggest grounding to the 5v lead- but if you're not cool enough already- then that would be a bad idea, as that would slow your fan down. The TT Volcanoe 7 with the High Medium Low switch should do ya. I have the variable speed (reads the temp and adjusts the fan speed accordingly) and I've been happy with it- but it gets kinda loud when things get hot.

As long as my CPU temp's are around 50 degrees or less I'm happy, so super cool isn't a huge priority. But, sound level is. I've been looking at the TT Volcano 7, but because of its automatic temp-control it'd be running at 5000rpm's all the time. My case & room temp's are usually pretty high. I wonder if there would be a way to modify it to stay at 2900rpm's? |

Consider a ThermalRight AX7, coupled with a Sunon 80mm 3900rpm/50cfm fan. I replaced my ThermalRight SK6/Black Delta 60mm/7K rpm screamer... shortly followed by an 80mm/funnel adapter.... and got temps cooler by about 8-10°C.
If in US, consider 1CoolPC... about US$30 for heat sink and about US$10 for fan.
I'm running a mildly OC'ed XP2100+ (at 138mHz fsb) and get temps within 18°C of mobo at 100% CPU output.

TT Volcano 7+ is great. And only 29.99 here.

I have a "cheap" (an $8 DP5-6i31c) CoolerMaster for my 1GHz T-Bird -- installed with Arctic II -- it works well.
IF I needed more -- like when I get my upgrade XP-2000+ this Fall -- I'd look for another CoolerMaster...the "heatpipe" sounds pretty good.
Thanks for the tip.

I'd recommend that you, like so many others have done, start out with the Thermalright AX-7 heatsink and then find an efficient 80mm fan that moves alot of air but isn't too noisy. |
