System stops

I have a several years old home built pc. I just put Windows 7 32 bit on it a few weeks ago? This is just history.

The issue is, the system just stops operating. Screens are open and it sounds like it's running but it is totally unresponsive to the mouse. This has been going on for awhile and it seems to be getting worse, ie it doesn't want to come back. I end up waiting awhile then I turn I off and reboot.

It was doing this before the upgrade.

Does anyone have any ideas? Seems to me if it were dying it would just die.

If you have the Windows disk you can try a repair install. How to Repair a Corrupt Windows 7 Installation | PCWorld

Edit- I see this was doing this before the upgrade. In that case there must be something wrong with the hardware. Maybe the disk drive is going bad.
