Office computer, $300.00 budget
Well, now that I have sooo much experience in putting this new home system together, I just had to brag about it at work. My boss has seen me solve computer problems at work, and now he thinks that I am some sort of techno-master. So of course I can just wave my wand and "poof" those out dated systems would all be working wonders instantly.
He (and me) want the computers to do what they are meant to do. But just upgrading them would not work. Only one of them uses SATA, and the one I use only has a 60 gig HDD. They are a miss mash of Dell and HP brands, so the cases and PSU's are even questionable for keeping. Also the boss wants to use one of these old ones as a front office workstation (quess who gets to be the new training dept?)
Summary: I am trying to put together a single workstation system on a very tight budget. All of the peripherals will be reused (monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, basically everything outside the case.
Budget $300.00
CPU: Any, as long as it is multi-core. Need it to speed up my work time.
RAM: At least 2 gigs, more if I can...
HDD: 500 gig or more
LAN: Would love a 10/100/1000 (the office network has this, but only the one system there can use the 1000) but need some sort of LAN
Other: CD/DVD, Case, PSU, Mobo(?)
Budget of only $300.00 (anything over would have to come out of me).
Before you ask, I have been looking at the name brands, but they all either are over budget, or very questionable.
Please, any help would probably save my butt at work. (Should learn to keep my big mouth shut.)

Oops, should mention that the OS and software are all already there, so they will just be re-used.
Also the graphics would be on chip or on board (what is the correct term nowadays?)
(And I really wish I had just kept my big mouth shut!)

Why does it not surprise me...
Shyguy, you have saved my bacon. Again.
Do have a question, though. I saw a case/psu combo that had me looking
APEVIA X-Gear ATXB5KLW-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 420W Power Supply
The big bother to me is that the psu is not named on the specs, and the only listing I found stated it only had 18 amps. had me a little worried, but with the small size of the rest...

if its an Apevia case, its an Apevia/Aspire PSU and their utter crap.

already looked through the Case/PSU listings and the only one worth anything is the Coolermaster Elite 330 Case (if I remember the model right) it has a Coolermaster 350W PSU in it.
but I had to take shipping costs into effect to keep under budget.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Got the hint about the Apevia case

Should have known that "deal" was too good to be true.
Went with yur suggestions, but...
Saw a deal on the CPU and DVD bundled.
Intel Pentium G850 Sandy Bridge 2.9GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623G850
bundled with:
1x LITE-ON Internal 24x DVD-Writer Black SATA Mode
Only $10 more than your suggestion. And (I think) a better CPU. (Tell me if I am wrong, again).

if you can swing the extra cost, yeah, its a bit better CPU.

Done. Just got to get the boss to sign for it in... OK, I've just been up all night and did not realize it. Boss will be in in less than an hour.
Forgot what the internet does to you...
And thanks for all of the help, Shyguy. You are an amazing person to put up with so many of us. Thank you.

I'd buy a used computer on Craigslist, them upgrade the MB and memory. PS would probably be ok if you don't use a high performance video card.
So you'd get your case, HD, CD rom, PS.. for a few dollars.Last edited by Chuckiechan; March 16th, 2012 at 02:52 PM. Reason: 'cuse I felt like it

of which would probably cost just as much in the end, as above, and end up with a lesser performing system.
